From the Principal

Mr Matt Elson

Hello Gympie, East parents, carers and community,

I can hardly believe that we are already at the halfway point of the year. To me it feels like yesterday that we were preparing for the first day of school. I hope families get some family time to spend together over the holidays and come back to school refreshed and ready for another Semester of learning.

Report cards were emailed home today, please let me know via email me on melso2@eq.edu.au if you did not receive one and I will personally email it out to you.

Preliminary results across all key learning areas achieving 90% receive an A, B, or C, with 95.2% of students receiving an A, B or C in effort.

  • In English, 89.2% of students received an A-C with 56.3% receiving an A or B in English.
  • In Mathematics, 89.7% of students received an A-C with 60% receiving an A or B in English. These are two of our key focus areas and even though our work will continue, these are very pleasing results.

Staffing

Congratulations to Mr Chris Walters who was successful in winning the Head of Curriculum position until at least the end of the year. He is a great addition to our Staff and we appreciate everything Mr Walters does at school.

PBL

Our focus for this week has been ‘Be supportive/support others’. The students took this message on loud and clear at our athletics carnival this week. I was blown away listening to students cheering on each other and consoling students when they did not win. I love running high jump each year, as the full range of emotions are shown in the ups and downs of a high jump competition. I was so happy to hear students exploding with applause when their competition made it over the bar but also there with a pat on the back when the bar came off and and they felt disappointed. Students supporting each other!

Perseverance Street

In Term 1, we took part in a program called Perseverance Street which was sponsored by Gympie Apex. 15 students from Gympie East in year 5 and 6 participated and took part in Drama workshops that was provided free of charge. They were excellent and they students absolutely loved the workshops.

Over the holidays, Perseverance Street began creating a play that was created from the work the students did in those workshops. This term, they came to our school and performed it for us while incorporating those students into the show. It was hilarious and absolutely fantastic to watch. We are very thankful to Gympie Apex and Perseverance Street, as well as Meeki Crotty and Hogan for providing these opportunities for our school.

Thanks

Mr Matt Elson
