Learning and Teaching

At LPS we pride ourselves on developing the whole child.  We do this in several ways through our academic, specialist, and well-being programs and opportunities. Our students are offered additional opportunities to further enhance and facilitate rich and engaging learning. These programs, inclusive of English, Mathematics, Drama, Dance, Animation, Gaming, Languages, Art, Sport, Music, STEM, Chess, and external opportunities to represent LPS, have enabled our students to excel beyond the scope of their classroom environment and apply their learning to new and different situations.

Eight of our students are currently engaging in external programs at the John Monash Science School (JMSS) in the areas of Mathematics and Science highlighting some opportunities that our students are afforded.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful parents who are helping facilitate this by transporting students to Monash University.

‘Little Scientists, Big Science’

Aekam, Archie, Callum and Jesse who are incredibly curious and passionate about Science have engaged in three sessions at JMSS this term.

Please read  Mrs Adams and Mrs Chamberlain’s STEM report for more information on this.

Mini Mathematicians

Four of our year 5 students are also engaging in learning at the JMSS but in the area of mathematics.  I have asked some of them to reflect on their learning which you can read below.

Every second Wednesday we go to Monash Uni and do a special maths program.  I work with three girls called Lydia, Karen and Thea who all attend Monash uni.  In the first session we worked on coding with a coding wheel.  We got to work out codes and give codes to each other work out.  It was super fun!  In the second session we did a lot of different things.  I worked with Thea and we worked on negative and positive numbers.  I learnt how to mulitply negative and positive numbers together.  I also learnt BODMAS which stands for Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.  It was challenging but interesting to learn. - Adele B

Every second Wednesday we go to John Monash to practise and learn advanced maths with some university students names Brendon, Ollie and Brendan.  They teach us new concepts and try to challenge us to get better.  In the first week we learned about codes and algebra.  They really challenged our thinking and we enjoyed the session.  During our second session we learnt about maps and graph theory and completed a fun activity to apply our learning. We would recommend this opportunity to anybody who loves maths and likes a challenge as you will be challenged! - Fin K and Kobe H

Have a wonderful weekend!
