Sustainability

Sustainability @BHPS

What a whirlwind Term One has been! We have seen through biderap dry season, with its long hot, dry days, where the Southern Cross can be seen high in the sky, and now through iuk eel season when the hot north winds fade and we get some relief from high temperatures. Over the coming school holidays, see if you can notice a change in the weather, plants and sky. Have you noticed our cool mornings or days getting shorter? Keep an eye out for wombats as they make the most of the weather. I think our recent visitor might have been a little early!

Over the term, the Gardening Club has continued to grow in numbers as word spreads and students show their interest in our school garden and their commitment to sustainability. We have weeded the welcome garden around the front of the school and have even planted a couple of grevilleas to encourage more biodiversity in our yard. The buckets and tongs have been popular for yard tidies. Remember, rubbish and food stay inside.

Students have communicated a desire to replant the garden spaces between the Administration Building and the Grade One space, and to make the gardens a ‘Habitat Zone’ for our friendly local animals. We have become a Junior Landcare school and have applied for a grant to fund a Wurundjeri Seasons Garden around our Yarning Circle. Junior Landcare provides lots of hands-on learning activities that link to the Curriculum, making it easy for teachers to incorporate sustainability into the classroom.

Have you been collecting your bottles and cans? Thank you! Bimbadeen has been accepted into the Container Deposit Scheme and is ready to accept your donations. Head to one of the many deposit centres and tell them our code, C2000010783, or scan our barcode and the donation will be sent to our school.

TIP: Screenshot this barcode and save into your favourites on your phone. We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing donations as the funds will be used to support our sustainability actions at school. This is an ongoing project so feel free to collect and donate for as long as you wish.

We are looking forward to seeing what is next for Term Two!

Stay tuned!
