Grade 5/6 Health Day

2024 Grade 5&6 Health Days – Personal Hygiene

Over the past fortnight all of Grade 5&6 students took part in a Health Day of which the focus was on personal hygiene. Over the course of the day the students were learning about different aspects of personal hygiene, why it is important and strategies on how to maintain good personal hygiene. To do this student engaged in a range of activities including brainstorming, researching and creating a presentation of a specific aspect of personal hygiene or a personal hygiene product idea, exploring cross contamination, evaluating handwashing techniques and discovering areas for improvement, prioritising hygiene products and determining frequency for different hygiene practices. Here is a little sample from the day:

On the health day we did a fun activity where we got split into groups and did a presentation on hygiene.  We also got put into a dark room and some gooey stuff (Glitterbug lotion) on our hands and saw how much bacteria we have after cleaning our hands. I did find it interesting how much bacteria we have on our clothes, body and object through cross contamination.  My favourite part of the day was that we got to learn something different.

We learnt how to keep our body and clothes clean. I found it interesting that sometimes it’s hard to get all the germs off when washing your hands.  I really enjoyed the glitter bug hand washing activity.

We got to make our own healthy product and made a word splash on personal hygiene.  I found it interesting the amount of germs still left on your hands after washing them.  My favourite part of the day was making my own personal hygiene product.

On the health day we ranked hygiene products in the order of importance.  We rubbed stuff on our hands, washed them and then shone a blue light on them to see how well we washed our hands. We also made a slide show on a hygeine product that we made up.  I found it interesting that hand sanitiser kills the germs but doesn’t get the dirt off them.  My favourite part of the day was making the slide show on our product.

We made a presentation and did some activities on personal hygiene. I found it interesting that germs can go on anything. I really liked the detective game where we had to find the contaminator in our classroom.

We learnt about personal hygiene. We found the glitter bug hand washing activity and the presentations on personal hygiene product ideas interesting and our favourite part of the day was the detective activity and creating our personal hygiene product.
