Subject Matter Expert drops in to St Edward's for all things MaST

This week we had the privilege of welcoming Mr Tim Unwin who shared his insights and expertise from the MaST Project.

Here's a glimpse of the highlights from his visit!

  • Mr Unwin conducted a learning walk through our Year 6 space, observing the Maths block within the collaborative environment.
  • Mr Unwin exposed Year 4 to a fun and engaging number warm up activity.
  • Year 4 made angle finders out of straws and pipe cleaners to be able to measure informal angles around the classroom.
  • He then led an engaging, modelled lesson in Year 2, teaching students about time, inspired by the Great Maths Lesson.
  • In Kindergarten, Tim was co-teaching with Mrs Shields, immersing students with activities to use Bead Strings effectively when learning Whole Number concepts!

Bead Strings at the Infants!

Bead strings are a fantastic educational tool for students in K-2. These beads help children understand basic mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction and even multiplication in a hands-on and visual way. For instance, when learning addition children can physically move beads along the string to represent adding numbers together. Similarly for subtraction, they can remove beads to represent taking away from a group. This tactile approach engages young learners and helps them grasp mathematical concepts more easily. Bead strings make learning maths fun and interactive, encouraging children to explore and experiment with numbers!
