Japanese City Adventure

At the end of last term, our Year 9 & 10 Japanese students dived into a world of cultural learning at the Consulate General of Japan. A delicious Japanese lunch at Superhiro fuelled them for a city-wide scavenger hunt, putting their language skills and term knowledge to the test!

On the 26th of March, the Year 9 and 10 Japanese class embarked on a city excursion to indulge in Japanese culture and learn more about Japan!

After getting off the train at Flinders Street Station, we visited Japanese appliance store Daiso. We had been tasked with finding and taking photos of various objects around the store. This gave us the opportunity to practice reading Katakana (Japanese alphabet), discover, and buy Japanese products. Some students bought snacks like ポッキー(Pocky, a Japanese snack), Japanese あめ (candy) and drinks like ラムネ(Ramune, a Japanese drink). Some students even bought cute plushies to take home.

After shopping, we attended a seminar designed to educate students on various Japanese topics. This year, we learned about Japanese food like Obento, Katsu don etc., while also expanding our vocabulary and practicing our listening skills. Additionally, the Japanese class was fortunate enough to meet students from Osaka, Japan who were visiting Melbourne! The class was made up of students aged 16-17, similar to us Year 9s and 10s. We were offered the opportunity to converse with Japanese students and exchange contact info for future conversations!

For lunch, we went to a Japanese restaurant, SuperHiro, where we had the choice of four different Bento boxes to eat. We enjoyed a delicious lunch while chatting with our peers.

Finally, the class had free reign and went on a scavenger hunt for Japanese stores scattered across the city. This included Uniqlo, Muji, Uncle Tetsu's and of course, sushi stores. We took the train back home with newfound knowledge and all sorts of Japanese objects.

Overall, we had a great time exploring the city and learning about the Japanese culture that surrounds Melbourne.
