New faces

Elisha Hamilton-Smith and Tayla Cherry

Inside the Science Lab

Our Science Department welcomed two Laboratory Technicians at the start of this term - let's meet them:

Meet Elisha Hamilton-Smith

What does a day in the life of St George’s consist of for you?

Preparing the consumables and materials that the students and teachers require for each demonstration, as well as ensuring safety is always kept front of mind.

What are the most exciting experiments you create for our students?

Flames and explosions are always popular with everyone in the classroom.

Who is your all-time favourite scientist?

Jens Christian Skou – Jens won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in a field that I worked in for 20 years before coming to St George’s. I had the privilege of meeting Jens in 2008 and was very impressed with his scientific rigour as well as his humility.

Do you have a hidden talent?

Remembering people’s names.

Meet Tayla Cherry

How does science play a role in our everyday lives?

Science plays a tremendous role! Just about every aspect of our lives is the result of a scientific discovery, from our cars and phones right down to baking cakes and bread, they all revolve around chemical reactions.

What influenced you to get into this field?

A few of my science teachers in high school definitely inspired me to pursue my passion for science however I think it all stems from my desire to understand how the world works.

Do you have a hidden talent?

I love to crochet! Last year I spent my winter making myself a big, cosy jumper but now I’m too scared to wear it since I don’t want to ruin it!

What is a skill you would love to learn?

I’d love to learn how to scuba dive, I spent so much of my childhood at the beach swimming or snorkelling around the boat while dad was diving that I’ve really grown to love the ocean. It’s something I’ve wanted to learn my whole life but just haven’t gotten around to doing.Â
