Going Green

New bin system

Campus recycling drive

Hello! I’m Linus – School Captain – and I’m writing to talk to you about the school’s new sustainability drive that the 2024 student leaders and I are looking to implement.

Starting from next term,  we will be introducing a three-bin system to St George’s, made up of general waste bin, a recycling/comingle bin, and a Containers For Change bin. There will be at least one of each bin located on every floor out in the hallway.

Now some helpful tips:

  1. Containers with the 10-cent mark can go in the containers for change. This includes most bottles and containers – including flavoured milk cartons – that you can find out and about. However, it does not include items such as milk bottles.

  2. Most paper, cardboard, cans, and hard plastics – so not things like muesli bar wrappers – can all be recycled.

  3. Everything else goes in the general waste – including, at this stage, food scraps.

The Guild recently enjoyed a visit from guest speaker Ed Miller, an expert in waste management, who helped us understand how we might be able to do it better.

The result is that our three bins will be:

  1. General waste (red)
  2. Mixed recycling (yellow)
  3. Containers For Change (white)
  4. And look out for new signage for you know how to recycle and do your bit to make the school's sustainability drive a big success!
