Year 11 & 12

Mr Tim Hayward

A pivotal juncture

As the curtains draw on our first term, it prompts a moment of reflection, a chance to pause and ponder my initial nine weeks within St George's Anglican Grammar School as the new Head of Year 11 & 12. What an extraordinary term it has been! Amidst the whirlwind of new challenges and captivating events that St George's has orchestrated in a mere nine weeks, I find myself marvelling at the experiences unfolding for the Year 11 and 12 students and so excited to have the privilege of leading the Year 11 and 12 students.

For the Year 11 cohort, this marks a year of metamorphosis, a pivotal juncture where they seize control of their academic destiny. Here, they step into the realm of self-determination, selecting courses in alignment with their aspirations, guided not by predetermined classes but by their own interests, under guidance from their teachers and family. It is a juncture brimming with possibilities, an opportunity not only to uncover their passions but to delve deeper into them, buoyed by the mentorship of their teachers who serve as experts in their chosen fields.

Meanwhile, our Year 12 students open their final chapter at St George's. It's a time infused with a blend of jubilation and contemplation, where they bask in the glow of their achievements while casting a gaze towards the horizon of what lies ahead. Within the span of this term alone, they've encountered a cascade of inaugural moments and farewells – from the anticipation of the first day as Year 12 students to the exuberance of their final School Ball, from the spirited camaraderie of the Interhouse Swimming Carnival to the reflective solemnity of their last representation for the school in the pool, a victory that shall echo through the annals of St George's history.

Moreover, they've woven the fabric of their memories with threads of novelty and nostalgia, embracing experiences such as Year 12 Drama camp and the farewell of the Colour Run (Gandhi Charity Day). And with many seemingly minor occurrences are imbued with the potential to shape the trajectory of their final year, serving as stepping stones towards a future illuminated by the promise of boundless opportunity.

Reflection serves as a cornerstone of personal development, offering a vital opportunity to pause, evaluate, and learn from our past experiences. It allows us to delve into the depths of our thoughts, emotions, and actions, unravelling our journey thus far. Through reflection, we gain invaluable insights into our strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth, enabling us to make more informed decisions and chart a course towards a brighter future. However, while reflection provides a crucial foundation for growth, it's equally imperative to balance introspection with forward-thinking optimism. While we learn from the past, our eyes must remain fixed on the horizon, where endless possibilities beckon. By embracing both reflection and forward-looking vision, we equip ourselves with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of life, seize opportunities, and turn our aspirations into reality.

As I reflect upon the remarkable journeys of the Year 11 and 12 cohorts, thus far, I am reminded of the richness inherent in every fleeting moment, and I eagerly anticipate the adventures that lie ahead, both for myself and for the vibrant community of learners that call St George's home.

Enjoy a wonderful Easter break surrounded with family and friends.
