Beginning Band Concert

In the last week of Term 1, Year 7 students in the Ensemble program held a concert in the PAC for family and friends, followed by a BBQ hosted by Band captains and our Music Support group.

It was a great celebration to end Term 1, and wonderful to hear the progress of our students after only a few short weeks.

Many thanks to Emma Moffatt and Ashleigh Hunter for the fabulous supportive atmosphere they are building in our junior music ensembles, allowing our year 7s to play with such confidence and enthusiasm.

Senior Band Captains Abbie, Heechan, Chris and Abigail stepped up to the challenge of running games for Beginning Band and choir after school, opening the concert, and cooking and serving at the BBQ. Thanks too, to those senior students who played in the group, and who helped out with serving food at the BBQ!

Our newly formed BHS Brass Ensemble had a fabulous time performing at the  Portarlington Brass Band Series on March 24th. An hour of continuous playing, a short break, then another hour of playing, is a lot for anyone, let alone junior players, so all are to be congratulated on their stamina! Everyone enjoyed the lunch kindly provided by the Portarlington Bakery, and appreciated the family and friends who came down to support our students. Thanks to the Bendigo Community Bank for supporting us, and to the lovely volunteers at the Band stand who looked after us so well all day.

Music Outreach Roslyn Primary School

In 2024 Emma Moffatt pioneered the Roslyn PS Music outreach program, offered to Grade 6 Roslyn PS students interested in learning an instrument and participating in the BHS Beginning Concert Band.

This year, the program has expanded to include a tutoring session as part of the Band rehearsal.

Last Wednesday saw excited Roslyn students learning how to put instruments together, and playing their first notes. It was fabulous to see our Year 7 students looking after their new band members so well, showing them how to play notes, and helping them enjoy their first rehearsal.

This is a great opportunity for Roslyn students to see our BHS values of respect, opportunity and resilience in action, as they work with our fabulous Year 7 music students

Thanks to Emma for her vision and hard work in making this program such a success.

And it’s official- we now have the most beginning trombone players of any state school in the Geelong region!

Year 1 and 2 students had their first assessed performance in the BHS PAC on the last Monday of Term 1. There were many stand out performances, and it was great to see students encouraging each other, and giving positive feedback during and after the performances.

Come along to the Barwon Club at the end of this term and see the groups in action!

Family and friends, all welcome, free entry!!

Two VET Year 2 Bands, ‘Orion’, and ‘Hazell’  played fabulous sets at the Chilwell Fair at the end of last term. Both groups were well received by the large crowd in attendance and gained some valuable stage experience. Congratulations to both bands for the professional way they represented BHS in our community.
