ECOLINC Excursion

Year 12 Biology students had the opportunity to go to Ecolinc as part of their lesson on Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO). Students were split into multiple groups and were given the chance to extract DNA from a variety of foods, use PCR to make copies of target DNA followed by setting up and running a gel electrophoresis. At the end, students were tasked with analysing the acquired results to identify the Genetically Modified plant sample. All the groups managed to get the intended outcome and showed great teamwork and diligence.

Bunsen Burner Licence:

Along with cheers and smiles, Year 7 students joyfully lit their very first ‘Bunsen burners’, setting the classroom aglow with excitement! Guided by their teachers, these young scientists eagerly explored the mysteries of heat and fire. This milestone not only sparks their passion for science but also marks the beginning of an exciting journey of discovery. Let's celebrate their first steps into the world of science!

Molecular Modelling

Year 10 students had immense fun assembling the DNA double helix structure using Kinex molecular modelling kits. All of the groups raced to assemble it and achieved their goal within 30 minutes. Great job, 10Sci3 students!

Year 9 and 10 Forensic Investigation

The Year 9 and 10 Forensic Science class went out to Quantum Victoria to engage in a Forensic Investigation. Gearing up in body suits to avoid contaminating the evidence, the students used their knowledge of fingerprinting, hair analysis, blood types, and more to narrow down the suspects. Excellent conduct and endeavour, young forensic scientists!

Estimating Heats of Combustion of Fuels

As part of their Unit 3 outcomes, year 12 Chemistry students were asked to investigate heats of combustion of fuel. They demonstrated excellent practical skills and enthusiastically participated in this practical activity.

Building structures of Diamond and Graphite:

Year 11 Chemistry students used Moly-mod kits to build molecular models of Diamond and Graphite. It was a fun group activity which enabled them to visualise these complex allotrope structures of Carbon.
