WRITING

Over the last few weeks, 3/4 students have been learning about Informative texts and have been writing Information Reports about the famous (not so well known animal) the platypus! We planned, researched and drafted our reports, before publishing and formatting. Check out some of the work samples and learn some interesting facts about the platypus down below!

After completing the Informative Texts, we have now moved on to a creative writing unit. Students were scaffolded into choosing an Australian specific topic linked to our Discovery unit, to use for their creative writing. Through this project, we aimed to include Student Choice, where students were responsible for selecting their own topic and the genre that they wanted to write in. We are currently still working on these and hope to have some published pieces for you soon!

MATHS

In Maths, Grade 3/4 Students have been learning about location and maps. We have enjoyed using directional language to complete tasks in the classroom and find our way around the local Pascoe Vale area. We mapped out some routes to and from our school to different local landmarks using specific langauge and then finished our unit with creating a detailed map of the 'new zoo'. Students were asked to include connecting pathways, a key and at least 8 different animal enclosures. We then had to use directions to explain to a partner how to get to or from a spot at the zoo!

Check out some of the amazingly designed maps!

DISCOVERY

Our favourite time of the term is now upon us! This is where students are now given choice into their direction of learning through our Discovery Topic, creating their own research projects.

Over the year, we have produced some wonderful Discovery projects and we are sure that this term will be no different!

So far, students have learnt about living, non-living and once living things, animal classifications, animal diets, leaf features, animal and plant life cycles, habitats and seed germination and food chains and food webs while exploring our topic 'life on our planet'.

We are very excited to see what topics and areas students choose to work on for their discovery projects and are hoping to see as much creativity as we have in the past!

We have also been active contributors to our school environment, getting out and harvesting our own plants, seeds and veggie patch!

REMINDERS

A few reminders for our 3/4 families!

It will be a busy end to the year, with many exciting and fun events coming up!

Please remember to check Compass for communications and note that at the moment there are two events requiring Compass permission

  • 3/4 Kris Kringle permission for those students who wish to participate in a class gifting experience, you will be given the name someone from your classroom to buy a small gift for, all participants will receive a gift from their KK in return

  • 3/4 End of Year Tee-Ball celebration @ Cole Reserve
This is where the final game will be played and a 3/4 class will be deemed the 'overall champion'. Students will be having hot chips on the day. There is a $5 cost involved and can be paid through Compass
