Grade 1 Area

Mrs Amy Gagliardi, Ms Emily Giliam and Ms Elizabeth Higham & Mrs Sarah Castellas

Though the year is almost finished, the Grade 1s have continued to be hard at work!

Writing

Over the past few weeks, Grade 1s have been learning to write information texts. Linking with our Discovery unit on gardens and mini-beasts, we have learned to identify and write facts about a topic, under the sub-headings of appearance, habitat, diet and fun facts. We have built our skills by writing about insects including butterflies, bees and ants, and this week have been writing about a creature of our own choice. Next week (Week 9) we will publish our work by creating our own information texts.

Maths

At this point in the year, we are revising all the concepts and skills we have covered throughout the earlier part of the year. This week, Grade 1s have focused on skip-counting patterns using 2s, 5s and 10s. Below you can see how we are using skip-counting patterns to help us count large collections of counters:

On Wednesday (November 27th) 1A and 5/6B combined for our multi-age Maths afternoon. Our 5/6 buddies supported the Grade 1s to play a range of counting games, including Snakes and Ladders. It was lovely to see all students working together beautifully and enjoying using their maths skills to play games.

Discovery

This week marked the beginning of the Grade 1s work on their minibeast habitat dioramas. Using shoeboxes (thank you to all who supplied these!), we began by planning our scene and decorating the background. The students have been extremely enthusiastic about this work, and will no doubt be incredibly proud of their finish products.
