Positive Behaviour Support
Celebrating Learning in P/1M
On Friday Prep / One M had their Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) lesson where we looked at our Positive Behaviour Matrix and the setting of Outside and in the playground. We talked about our PBS school values of we are.. Learners, Caring and Proud and what that means to each of us. We then went outside and took photos demonstrating theses values. E.g. We put rubbish in the bin, We line up for class when the music starts, we seek help if needed, we invite others to play. We then made a poster and presented these at assembly.
What is PBS?
The goal of School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) at Numurkah Primary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment that enhances our school culture where we maximise individual academic and social growth.
PBS focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours while providing targeted assistance to students who may need extra support, leading to a more successful and inclusive learning community. When implemented well, it ensures that all students receive support to maximise behavioural, wellbeing and academic growth.
The approach also improves teacher wellbeing by providing them with the tools to establish positive climates for learning where they can focus on teaching and learning, by increasing engagement and instructional time.
PBS is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
The PBS approach is comprised of evidence based behavioural interventions and practices that can be implemented by staff to effectively address and support the socially and educationally important behaviour needs of students and their families.
PBS has conceptual foundations in:
• Behavioural Theory – Behaviour is learned, lawful and malleable.
• Applied Behaviour Analysis – Behavioural theory, principles and practices that are applied in the settings in which they are observed.
• Positive Behaviour Support – Behavioural supports are considered in the larger context of improving quality of life.
