Year 6 Excursion
Safe Journey

We first had the assignment to plan a convenient journey to the Melbourne Museum. It was a hard task. We mainly used the PTV journey planner. Ms. O'Dwyer then finalised the journey to the museum.
The next day we got ready to go to the Malvern train station down Station Street, Malvern. The original train we planned to get didn't actually go to Parliament Station so we took it to Richmond Station instead.
Once we had arrived at Richmond Station we changed platforms and went on the train to Parliament. The train journey was very pleasant and smooth.
We then walked the not-so-long walk to the museum before we checked in and began our day. We first had people called Asad and Ben introduce themselves before they put us into the groups we had for the day.
We were given tap-tap interactive cards to explore the screens to learn about road safety. We had bits like, do your part, what you needed to survive a car accident, and the difference between a new and used car. We also had the chance to experience the VR system they had. We saw all the changes that have happened, from when the seatbelts were made mandatory to experiencing the future’s self-driving cars.
After our exciting experience at the interactive learning screens and the VR, we met up back at the sofas where we had started and talked about what we had learned. Our teachers took us outside to enjoy our lunch and have a play around at the park.
After an hour or so we were taken back inside to… make ads! The ads were to inform people about road safety. They had to be under a minute and we had to have a slogan. My group's slogan was “look up or go up.” referring to go up into heaven if you don’t look up. We then had the heat turned up. The two best ads out of the four would be selected to be sent into a competition where other schools that did the activity also send their ads in and we have to see who wins. We have not yet decided which ones we will send in.
We then thanked our instructors and collected our belongings and walked back to Parliament station. We basically did the trip backward. We went from Parliament Station to Richmond Station and changed platforms to grab the train to Malvern Station (Station St.)
We were very grateful for our experience to get to go to the museum.

We walked all the way to the Malvern Train Station, going to Richmond Station, got onto another train to Parliament Station, we got off, and walked to the Melbourne Museum.
When we got there we got an introduction from Road to Zero, as we got to go into the Exploration room with key passes that let you see the impact speed has on our bodies, different ways you can make the road safe, or how cars have changed over the years. After the Exploration room, we got to go into a lab to make ads for road safety for pedestrians.

On the 25th of October, Year 6 went on a train to the Melbourne Museum and learned about road safety. On our way to the Melbourne Museum, we walked up to the Malvern station and took a train to Richmond which then went to Parliament and safely got to the Melbourne Museum.
When we got to the museum, we did activities that involved making an ad and using a VR to see the different cars in different years. We went there to learn about road safety and pedestrians. We also learned that you would need to have bones made out of steel to be unharmed during a 70km crash.
There was an exhibit that showed what humans would need to look like to be able to survive high speed crashes.

During the lead up to the excursion, we did some work on road safety, like when we went to Glenferrie Road for only ten minutes, and the number of people not doing the right thing was crazy. Lots of people were on their phones or distracted while driving, not giving way, or jaywalking. We also were in charge of coming up with our route to the Melbourne Museum and the group with the best was chosen.
On our journey to the Melbourne Museum, things did not go to plan. We expected to walk down to the train station and take the one train all the way there, but we had to hop off at Richmond Station because the train wouldn’t go through the city loop. So we had to wait for another and take that down to Parliament Station.
When we got to the Museum, we did a program called Safe Journeys. We learned about how to stay safe on the road as pedestrians, passengers, and when we use public transport and we did cool road safety activities, one of them being VR Goggles.
We participated in doing activities like adding safety features to a car like adding airbags and reversing cameras. We also had to add safety features to roads to make it safer for pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists. We added things to prevent speeding and accidents like roundabouts, traffic lights, and barriers. Another interesting activity we did was we watched how safety features were slowly added into cars across the years using a VR headset like the seat belt being added in to prevent major injuries.
Towards the end of the day in groups, we created a road safety ad to keep pedestrians safe on the roads. The Road Safety team hopes that if people on the roads follow our advice then by 2050, we will aim to have zero road deaths in our community.
Hopefully, the ads from our incursion will inspire pedestrians and drivers to stay safe on our roads and to keep everyone safe.
