A note from Mr Jackson

Welcome back to Term 3.  While visiting a number of classes this week, I have reflected on the importance in maximising learning opportunities. Starting with the students’ reflection through Three Way Conferences enables a sharpened focus on where we have been and what needs to be achieved. There is lots planned over the coming period that includes; the school concert, fundraisers and special events. I encourage all to be regular readers of the newsletter and to keep an eye on Compass.

Three Way Conferences Bookings (Start on Monday 22 July)

We don’t want any child to miss out on their Three Way Conferences. Students have been preparing their learning to present to their family members. Student school attendance will occur as normal on the days of the interviews.

Most of the interviews are on Monday 22 July and Tuesday, 30 July our Three Way Conferences have been scheduled. 56D will meet on the alternative days of Thursday, 25 July and Thursday, 1 August. Parents and Carers are invited to nominate their preferred times using Compass. The meetings are open on Compass and can be made by visiting the Community Icon and selecting Conferences. If you have any difficulty, then please contact the office.

The 15 minute Three Way Conference actively involve parents, students and teachers reflecting on student growth as a learner, while acknowledging the most important participants in the learning process – student, teacher and parent/carer. This team looks at the evidence shown in the student’s learning samples and listens as the student talks about their learning growth and goals.

The Three Way Conferences strengthen the home-school partnership and allows children to see their parents and teacher working together with them. The student can provide information to clarify what they have learnt, what are the next steps in their learning, and what progress they are making towards this. The student facilitates the conference and is supported by the teacher when needed. As the student develops in confidence, they require less teacher support.

Throughout the conference, parents and the teacher are encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback and encourage the student to share their thoughts and ideas on what is being presented.

Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony

While we looked forward to the possibility of a Welcome to Country this week, the first week back at school after NAIDOC Week, we have unfortunately been unable to hold the event. Many will recall the significant experience of the smoking ceremony last year. We look forward to rescheduling the event in the coming weeks.

Working Bee (Saturday 10 August)

A tentative date for Saturday 10 August has been set aside for a Working Bee. The focus this term will be to renew some of the hazard lines around the school (eg. edges of steps, zig zag lines) as well as shaping a student inspired ‘Frog Bog’ at the northern end of the admin building. It is a great chance for our community to share in the student learning that has arisen in the 2/3/4 Learning Area. Their investigations have been richly informed by special guests around frog habitats! Block out the time between 9am and 12noon and join us to improve our school environment!

ICAS Invitation (See Compass Newsfeed for more)

This is an invitation to students in Years 2 to 6 who wish to extend their learning by participating in an ICAS Assessment. It is an opportunity particularly focused on students who work at or beyond their expected learning areas. Please note these tests are not compulsory, they are simply an opportunity for students to challenge and extend themselves in the areas of English, Writing, Mathematics and/or Science. The tests are completed during school hours.ICAS is an online academic assessment that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.  Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.

Information on payments and registering are on the Compass Newsfeed. Please note the final day for registration is 29 July.

Staying Active At Rosanna Primary

Two big events are planned to keep students active in the upcoming weeks;

  • On Thursday 25 July some of our senior students will be participating in Hoop Time! This is an opportunity to improve a range of individual and group skills while participating positively in a round-robin competition. Other schools in the district will be competing in the carnival.
  • Students in the Year 1 and Year 2 classes will be participating in swimming on Thursdays! There sessions will start on Thursday 1 August. Our Prep students will participate in lessons during Term 4.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please have a conversation with your classroom teacher, Lynda Whitechurch or myself.

No Rest on Holidays at Rosanna Primary

A range of mysterious busy parents were ‘sprung’ over the holidays gifting their time and energy in planting and beautifying our school. Many will have noticed fresh plantings around ‘the oval’ and the main site. This gift of time and energy are greatly appreciated by all.

A range of other works took place over the holidays including:

  • Arborist works that cleared a lot of dead wood from trees and ensured our spaces are safe
  • Cleaning of the gutters to prevent water overflow onto paths
  • Repairs on a leaking roof in the old admin building
  • Planned periodical cleaning
  • Servicing of our significant machinery
  • Inspections of our gas mains

School Concert … Will You Be There?

We are excited in preparing for what will be a wonderful 2024 school concert held on Tuesday, 8th October 2024 at Loyola College. Staff have been collaborating and shaping this extravaganza of dance, performed by classes throughout the school.

If you are planning school holidays that will extend into the term four school term, you may miss out. If this is the case, I urge you to write a letter to me seeking approval of your extended holiday as soon as possible. This will enable teachers and students to shape each class performance with the students who will be present on the night. It will also prevent students from being disappointed when they are unable to be present with their peers to perform their class item. Students who will not be present during the evening will be provided with supportive roles rather than participate in the performance itself. Even though they won't be here on the performance night they still will have an opportunity to contribute and their contribution celebrated.

More information will follow regarding the purchase of tickets, the nature of the evening and the timeline leading towards this school spectacular.

Collaboration Celebration Coming up (Tuesday 30 July)

We look forward to celebrating Collaboration Day on Tuesday, 30 July. Students, and parents if they dare, are invited to dress in yellow to mark this important value in our school community. A range of different activities across classes will be a chance to enhance collaboration skills and remind us all of the centrality of collaboration in our society. Keep your eyes on Facebook to see a little of what students and staff get up to as they work together to achieve the remarkable! There is more information on Compass.
