The theme for this years Children’s Book Council of Australia Book week is "Reading is magic". When you think about it, words on the printed page, or online, have the amazing ability to inspire our imaginations and we can visualise all sorts of situations. One of the books on the short list is ‘A Hunger of Thorns’ by Lili Wilkinson which fits into the fantasy genre where the reader is placed in a magical realism setting with themes about contemporary life. Another shortlisted novel is ‘Grace Notes’ by Karen Comer which explores the wider impact of the COVID 19 lockdowns and how the restrictions affected two young people. The main female protagonist plays her violin on an empty tram which inspires an artist to paint her portrait in a Melbourne alley.  Reading can take us anywhere anytime and that is why we encourage the students at St Peter’s to choose books which can challenge their minds.
