The Catholic Church honours and celebrates Australia's first official saint on the 8th August. The students are learning about this caring and wonderful Australian in their classes.
Mary MacKillop was born on 15 January 1842 in Fitzroy, Melbourne. She began her ministry in Penola, South Australia, with the assistance of Fr Julian Tenison Woods. Mary MacKillop founded the order of nuns known as the Sisters of St Joseph. They set up schools to provide an education for children, safe houses for children and women in need and hospitals to care for the sick. Mary MacKillop died on 8 August 1909 in Sydney. Mary MacKillop was officially canonised and proclaimed as a saint of the Catholic Church on 17 October 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Pray for us
The Catholic Church honours Mary, the Mother of Jesus, on the 15 August. This feast is known as The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and it is the day we acknowledge Mary being assumed into Heaven.
The whole school will join parishioners at the 10.00 am Mass in St Michael's Church on Thursday 15 August. Deacon Malcolm has arranged for a visiting priest to celebrate the Mass. Students will read the Prayers of Intercession and the school choir will lead the singing of songs in honour of Mary.
All school families and friends are welcome to join us for this special Mass.
For Political Leaders
Let us pray that political leaders be at the service of their own people, working for integral human development and the common good, taking care of those who have lost their jobs and giving priority to the poor.
Amen
