Year 6 Newsletter

Dear Year 6 Parents,

How can you engage with your child about their learning at school?  A big and important question that we would like to focus on over the next 2 terms. As your child moves into high school, the consistent communication and fortnightly  updates drop off and you may be left wondering what your child is actually doing at school. Spending some time talking about classroom activities and learning, asking questions about understanding and confidence will all help build the school/home connection.

Week 1 + 2 learning:

Writing Focus: Information Reports

This week the students chose a country to focus on for a research project in class (different from the home-based project) . We have looked at great focus questions to guide our research, and the strategy of reading and writing information in our own words.

A Big Write this week revisited narrative writing, incorporating higher level literary features such as varying sentence length, using beginning and connecting connectives, adding in appositives and leaving the reader with “I want to read more!”

Mathematics Focus: Order of operations (BODMAS)

Since returning back to school we have worked on how to use Order of Operations. It has been fabulous seeing all students' confidence growing in this unit. This week we have moved on to calculating 50%, 20%, 10% and 5% off sale items. Next time you are out shopping see if your child can help you out with working out sale prices.

Inquiry Topic: Geography - Liveability

What other countries around the world do you know? What is your general knowledge about countries, continents, capital cities and oceans? We looked at capital cities around the world and investigated National Olympic Committees participating in the Paris Olympics. A class quiz turned our calmest classrooms into a ruckus.

Homework Task:

Each week our students are reminded to make a start on their homework project. This has 2 parts and is posted on Google classroom. Part 1 is due at the end of Week 5. Part 2 is due at the end of 9, with a Country Exhibition and Travel Expo happening in Week 10. Please ask any questions. Reading diaries are due on Thursdays and there is optional Mathletics tasks set.

High School Acceptance Slips

On Wednesday an email was sent out confirming high school placements for next year. Attached to that email was an Acceptance Slip form. This needs to be filled in and sent back as soon as possible.
