Year 5 Newsletter
Welcome back Year 5 Families!
It is so lovely to have all our Year 5’s back in their classrooms.
Gold Rush Fever has well and truly overtaken our classrooms, with students experiencing what it would have been like in Ballarat in 1851. With no rules and no laws, it has been interesting to see if everyone is out for themselves or taking a kinder approach. Our new inquiry topic, Gold Rush! Good, Bad or Ugly?, has been introduced with the students sharing their curiosity about this time in history. We will encourage the students to think, wonder and learn about the Gold Rush and how it shaped Australia.
We are excited to be planning our first excursion for the year. Later this term, the students will have the opportunity to experience the magic and adventure of the Gold Rush era at Sovereign Hill. They will be immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of the 1850s. Our inquiry unit will be linked to many reading activities, allowing students to investigate topics linked to the Gold Rush.
We have dived into our literacy program. Over the course of the term, students will be exposed to new and exciting vocabulary, brush up on their grammar skills and investigate a range of strategies to expand sentences and write a factual recount.
In Mathematics, we have been very busy developing our knowledge about division and we will move to our new unit fractions, decimals and percentages next week. Please remember that Mathletics is a resource your child can continue to use at home!
This semester we are lucky to have Mrs. Pearce for Library. Please remember to return any overdue items, so your child is still able to borrow each week.
