Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport
Last weekend saw the commencement of our term 3 AIC sports with tennis, basketball and rugby league competing against Villanova College in round 1, hockey starting in the Brisbane Schoolboys season with two teams for the first time, and track and field hosting our first internal meet of the season. It was a busy weekend with much to celebrate for Marist teams across the board.
It started on with hockey with our second team defeated by St Edmunds College 6-2 in their first game. Our 1st IV tennis team had a good win 6-2 and Marist won 12 matches to 4 losses overall. The 1st XIII rugby league boys were dominant throughout winning 34-12 with the program winning 10 from 11 matches against Villanova. The 1st V basketball went down in a tight one by 2 points to Villanova in a great team performance that could have gone either way with Villanova winning the day overall with 11 wins to Marist and 20 losses. Marist hosted all junior rugby league fixtures last weekend. Our thanks go to rugby league coordinator Mr Ryan Apps for his oversight and organisation of a well-run day.
This weekend we travel to Padua College. We look forward to a day of friendly competition against our local rivals. I reminded the boys on assembly in week one that as Marist men we must always maintain our discipline and control as we represent the College in any sporting competition and in any environment.
Uniforms
A reminder that all old sports uniforms have been retired after a two-year grace period in 2021 and 22. All boys need to be wearing the current uniform, with old supplier unforms, such as BLK, can be worn to training but cannot be used in competition matches.
Marist College Ashgrove and the AIC are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for students, staff and community members. Expectations for players, coaches, officials and spectators are very clear in the AIC Code of Conduct. Everyone in the community should be aware of their obligations and expectations in line with this code.
The Code of Conduct is available on the AIC website as well as on the individual sports pages in the College App.

Rugby Union
Congratulations and good luck to Peter Chan and Ike Rowland who will be representing Met North this weekend at the 15-year state rugby union championships hosted by Met North. Good luck also to Mr Daykin who is the coach of the Met North side.
Mr Ryan Apps - Coordinator
What a round of Rugby League last Saturday versus Villanova was - we always knew it would be tough games for most year age group teams and it did not disappoint.
A fantastic result with Marist only losing one game all day, a brilliant result and one which saw some amazing footy being played by our teams.
Again, our Marist teams stood up and gave all they had, and I must say I am very proud of them, as should everyone. It was again fantastic to see all teams supporting each other, the Marist culture and spirit was on show for all to see.
The coaches have been developing their teams since last term and we are seeing this in the performances, not everyone will always win but if the teams are giving everything, they have who can ask anymore, we should all stand together and be very proud of them.
Thank you to the parents for your support and assistance in all aspects towards our coaches and development of our Rugby League Program, we will continue to strive hard to develop the program over this season and for seasons to come.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend off and the teams come back off this mini break ready to go for another round of Rugby League.

1st XIII v Villanova College
Jasper Barry - 1st Rugby League Captain.
The 1st XIII boys travelled out to Wynnum on Saturday to take on Villanova in a match that proved the depth of the Marist rugby league program. The game was a tough one playing in strong winds which meant that the game was played in the middle third and was very physical. Slowly Ashgrove took the ascendancy and ran to an 18-0 lead. Villa did not relent and started to worry the Marist boys as they climbed back into the match to trail 18-12. After some troubling times, the Marist spirit shone through, and the 1st XIII took complete control to run out winners 36-12. Well done to Nate Roberts who was flawless with the boot kicking 6 from 6 in horrendous conditions.
Ms Kathryn Badini - Coordinator
In a competition first, Marist has registered two teams in the School Boys Hockey Cup – our First XI going from Year 7 - 12, and a Second’s Year 12 Boarders team. When this current version of the Cup started in 2012, it was the Senior Boarders of that year who helped rally to get a team in the competition. I’ve always been so grateful to those Boarders because we’ve had some brilliant club players over the years (and do now) who would have missed out on playing in the blue and gold. It’s wonderful therefore that we’ve been able to return Hockey back to Boarding.
Hockey is not an easy sport to pick up. Yet, our Seconds showed great enthusiasm both against our 1st XI on Wednesday afternoon, and Friday afternoon against the current reigning champions of the competition, St Edmund’s College. That was a particularly hard-fought game, and whilst the win did ultimately go to Eddie’s, let it not be forgotten that we scored first. A special shout-out to Luca Martinuzzi and Hugo Tully, who both had a great go in goals, and Royden Maelaua and Monte Andrews who showed some really promise in attack.
Next week, our Firsts play Brisbane State High on Wednesday, and our Seconds play Padua College on Friday. Watch this space.

Round 1 vs Villanova College
1st V: Marist 56 – Villa 58
1st V Coach’s Report – James Lidstone
Heading out to Coorparoo for Round 1 was always going to be a challenge. In saying that, we were going into the game expecting to play well and end their 3-year undefeated streak.
We started a little slowly and found ourselves in a 9-point hole at quarter time. Insert Jacob Cook and Isaac Deem and that 9-point deficit quickly became a 3-point lead. Jacob’s rebounding effort sparked the run and Deemy was lights out from deep. The team steadied and played some inspired defence and by the main break, we had our noses in front by 3.
We continued to play admirable defence but some lapses on the defensive glass gave our opponents too many second-chance points and upon reflection, that was the difference in the game. With Matt Gibson directing traffic and Harry Cook dominating the paint we held onto a slight lead as we started the fourth. Some crucial moments in our control and some out of our control did not go our way and unfortunately, the occasion got the better of us and an opportunity was lost.
Sport is a great teacher and there is always lots to learn but it was a game that we lost, and that is going to spur us on for the remainder of the season. The crowd support for an away game was superb, the boys really appreciate supporters hanging around to watch and we hope we can get that same support as we head to Kedron for Round 2.
1st V Captain’s Report – Matt Gibson
In a thrilling encounter between Marist and Villanova, the 1st XI basketball game kept fans on the edge of their seats as it swung back and forth throughout the contest. Both teams displayed intense determination and skill, making for an unforgettable matchup.
From the outset, the game was tightly contested, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. Marist showed their spirit and pride, maintaining a strong presence on the court despite the challenges posed by Villanova's relentless offense. The match saw standout performances from players stepping up when needed the most.
One of the game's pivotal moments came when Isaac Deem, emerging from the bench, ignited Marist with three crucial three-pointers. His sharp shooting provided a much-needed lift, rallying the team and energizing the crowd. The atmosphere was electric as Marist supporters rallied behind their team, sensing a potential comeback.
However, the game remained fiercely competitive until the final moments. Despite Marist's spirited efforts and Deem's heroics, Villanova managed to maintain a slight edge. The match concluded with a heartbreaking twist as Marist narrowly missed a game-winning shot, leaving fans and players alike with mixed emotions.
Despite the outcome, Marist's coach and supporters expressed pride in the team's performance and resilience. The boys fought hard until the final buzzer, showcasing their commitment and teamwork. As they look ahead, Marist remains optimistic and determined, knowing they will bounce back stronger.
Next week promises another exciting challenge as Marist prepares to face Padua. With lessons learned and spirits high, Marist is eager to continue their journey in the season, buoyed by the support of their loyal fans and the pride of representing their school on the court.
Mr Andrew Ward - Directory of Tennis
We commenced Round One under splendid weather conditions and with exceptional tennis as our team travelled to Morningside to face Villanova College in a highly anticipated matchup. Marist College's tennis program performed admirably, securing 12 wins out of 16 matches on Saturday. Even in the few matches we lost, the margins were narrow, and I am immensely proud of the boys' efforts.
Our 1st IV team demonstrated that the hard work and team bonding we have tirelessly cultivated are truly paying off. There were commendable performances across the board, but a few deserve special mention. Lachlan Braithwaite displayed remarkable tenacity, winning his singles match in straight sets. Hamish Davidson, despite enduring immense pain from a blister the size of a small crater on his hand, fought valiantly to secure a victory for the team. Henry played a commendable match, though it wasn’t his day, as he fell to Villa's number one. Fletcher Wessling dominated his matches with flawless tennis, earning him the MVP award. Well done to the entire team. Our focus now shifts to Padua College next week, followed by our first home game against Iona College in Round Three.
The Second and Third teams also delivered outstanding performances, overcoming a resilient Villa team. Ultimately, Marist's strength prevailed, leading to decisive victories. Our 4th team fought gallantly but fell short in a very entertaining match. Great start to the season so far.
Our year-level teams largely savoured the sweetness of victory, with only a few narrowly defeated in closely contested matches. The Year 10A team, unfortunately, lost by a narrow margin on countback, while the 10B team triumphed with ease. Special commendations are due to our Year 8 and 9 teams, who displayed impeccable performance, decisively winning all their matches. The Year 7A team experienced a close loss, unable to finish their matches, but our 7B triumphed easily in the first match out. Our
Our 6A team having a great win dominating most matches but were pushed by a very defiant opposition and the 6B team faced an unfortunate defeat due to a no-show from a player, an easily preventable setback.
The Year 5 team exhibited absolute dominance, securing their matches with an overwhelmingly one-sided scoreline. It is heartening to witness such a wealth of talent among our players, and the pride these boys take in representing their team, year level, and school is evident in their gracious and humble conduct in victory.
Congratulations to every team on their commendable efforts and well-deserved success.
1st IV Captain Report by: Henry Lambley
Last Saturday the First IV tennis team played our first round against a young, talented Villanova at Morningside Tennis Centre. Our day started with team introductions and after a brief warm-up, the boys were ready for play.
A strong showing by Fletcher and Lachie against the Villa number one doubles pairing and a hard-fought win by myself and Hamish left us 2-0 up after the first doubles and in a commanding position.
Into the singles we went and after I lost my match, Hamish pushed through injury and dug deep to score a gutsy 6-0 7-5 win. After a close start, Fletcher pulled away to record a convincing 6-3 6-0 win. In another long battle, Lachie got through to win 6-3, 7-6 and we could not lose going into the final two doubles 5-1 up.
Hamish’s injury meant that Harry White got to step up and play his first match for the First IV. A tough but competitive loss in this match followed another dominant display by Fletcher and Lachlan leaving us with a solid 6-2 win to start the season. For his outstanding tennis on the day, Fletcher was chosen as MVP for Round 1.
We hope to continue this strong form next week and look forward to playing another strong, talented team in Padua.
Reminder for all AIC training
Students are to please notify us well in advance if unable to play on Saturday for the school. This gives us time to find a new player so that we do not have to forfeit sets and ultimately have that team lose on the day.
All students must wear the correct uniform to train and also for Saturday matches. This is across all sports played throughout the year.
Please be on time for training in the mornings. We want all students to arrive as a team, warm up as a team, and play together as a team. Not a good look turning up 10 minutes late and disrupting the lesson and the coaches who prepare for each session.
So please be on time ready to start at 6.45 with warm ups and be ready to go.
Again, teams will be advertised every Thursday on the Marist App for all teams playing this weekend.
Important Dates
Marist Senior and Junior Doubles Championships
Marist Singles Championships
Break-up Party
Christmas Break-up Party and Parent/Son Tournament
Good luck to all teams this weekend. Go Marist !!!

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming
As we dive into Term 3, I would like to extend my best wishes to the following swimmers who will be competing at the Australian School Nationals held at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre from the 27 July – 3 August. These six athletes have been rigorously training throughout the winter months in preparation for this prestigious event:
Good luck to all of you!
Our swimming program is back in full swing, and despite the cold weather, the pool maintains a comfortable 27.5 degrees. It's crucial for all swimmers aspiring to join the AIC swimming team this year to start their training right after the Ekka break. Early preparation is key to shaking off any rust and ensuring we are in the best possible shape for the team.
We have some exceptional swimmers in our College, and continuous improvement as a team hinges on consistent preparation and effort. After the Ekka break, there will be several swimming sessions available for boys to begin their preparation for Term 4.
Having finished second for the past eight years, it is imperative that we continue to strive for excellence. Consistency in our training and preparation is the cornerstone of our success.
