Shortt Story Showdown
The ‘Shortt Story Showdown’ continues to grow. It remains a real highlight of my term and a delightful showcase of writing talent and creativity at Magill. In Term 2, we saw more than double the participants than the first competition back at the start of 2023.
The challenge last term was extremely competitive – with the brief being an ‘Internal Monologue’ – a narrative technique that reveals a character’s inner thoughts and feelings directly to the reader. This form of writing allows readers to understand a character’s motivations, emotions, and thought processes, often providing deeper insight into their personality and actions.
This inspired plenty of creativity for our participants; with ideas ranging from deciding what to order at a restaurant, to the struggles of an apocalyptic world, and some insight into wearing metaphorical ‘masks’ in society.
Despite the incredible blend of talent and hard work on display, there can only be one winner at each year level. Last term, I am proud to announce the winners were Ainsley Clark (Year 4), Hadi Kazmi (Year 5), and Joanna Lim (Year 6). They take home a $20 K-Mart voucher and a $15 Dillons Bookshop voucher. Congratulations to all involved and a special congratulations to our deserving champions for Term 2 2024.
As I will be away for a long stretch of Term 3, the competition will take a break and recommence in Term 4. Please enjoy the winning entries below.
