3 Way Conferences and Rubrics

This term we will be holding 3 Way Conferences on Monday 19th and Wednesday 21st of August. The conferences are an opportunity for parents and carers, students, and teachers to reflect on progress and achievements, and to think about the next steps in learning. We value our student input into this process and they will be working hard over the next two weeks to prepare for their conferences. This term, students will be talking about a rubric that they have recently worked on. This might be in Mathematics, Writing, Spelling, or another area of the curriculum. Rubrics are a way to display the steps in the development of a skill or knowledge and are usually arranged in a grid, moving from beginning skills through to more complex skills or knowledge. They are a powerful metacognitive tool that empowers students to ‘think about their own thinking’.  We have begun using rubrics as a tool to make individual students’ learning paths clear to them, so that they are able to see where they are in their learning journey in a particular area, and what the next step or skill is that they need to master. Students from Foundation to Grade 6 have been working with the rubrics to enable them to really see and understand their own learning. This enhances their control over their learning and can increase motivation, as students are able to set themselves goals and monitor their progress along with teacher feedback.

Teachers and students are looking forward to sharing this work on rubrics and learning with you, and more details about how to book your 3 Way Conference on Compass will be sent out once bookings open.
