Leaders for Change

Celebrating cultural diversity

Our Leaders for Change group, Alec, Hilaac, Luci, Azura and Nathan from Years 7 and 8, ran an exciting and varied 'Culture Week' program as the culmination of their term working with Mohamed Semra from Endeavour Youth. Their goal was to come up with a project to celebrate the cultural diversity at our school and they did a fantastic job. Here are some of the highlights:

Anti-Racism Unity Cup

The Leaders for Change group organised the Anti-Racism Unity Cup. The cup ran over a week, and teams played well including the teachers only one team could come out on top and that ended up being Spain. Good job to all the teams that participated. After the cup week had ended a muck-up game ran at lunch on Wednesday and teachers ended up taking it home 2-0. Overall, it was an amazing week with a fun, exciting, and energetic vibe.

Cooking session and BBQ

One thing we wanted to celebrate from cultures around the world was food! During the week we organised a cooking session where students had the opportunity to cook a food from different cultures and share it with junior school students. Overall the sharing circle was filled with colour and happy students ready to taste new things!

Another event full of food was a free barbecue for all junior school students, the event was mainly student run and extremely successful. Students lined up to receive a roll with either barbecued chicken and dip or falafel.

Asanti Dance

For the Performance section of the Culture Week, Leaders for Change organised a performance with Asanti Dance Theatre. After a series of emails and invoices, the performance happened on Friday last week. It was amazing, and from the sounds of laughter and music coming from the hall, we all loved it. The performance also included 70 drums for students to use, two incredibly skilled performers from Ghana, (one amazing acrobat and one incredible musician), and of course a few lucky students who got to go on stage.

A big thank you to Ms Tess Legge for her organisation and support of this group throughout the term.
