Social Beans

Purpose

Social Beans is a subject where students will put into practice hospitality, entrepreneurial and management skills while running a coffee cart business. It provides an opportunity for practical hands-on learning as students will obtain barista training from professional baristas, enhancing their employability skills. Whilst also getting the opportunity to investigate charities, suppliers and ethical practices to make informed decisions that will influence the business that they are running. 

 

The aim of the subject is to provide students with practical skill development using a problem-based learning approach. Students will nurture the gift of hospitality and service while also looking to maximise profit that can be donated towards a charity of their choice. They will practice being socially responsible in caring for the planet, environment and its people. This subject will foster collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking whilst working on the job and as they deal with the challenges of running a business.

Structure and Content

This subject will introduce key knowledge and skills relevant to VCE Food Studies and Business Management. Food Studies concepts that will be introduced include food ethics, citizenship and sovereignty, sustainability, hospitality as a kingdom value. 

Business concepts that will be introduced are what is a social enterprise, understanding corporate social responsibility, financial literacy, customer relations, marketing, and human resource management. Also, the importance of operations management by working on providing an effective and efficient service delivery to optimise their impact. Students will get to run their Social Enterprise business in a pop-up coffee shop situation in and around DCC.
