Chemistry

Purpose
The Chemistry course is designed to prepare the student for the study of VCE Chemistry. Chemistry is a key science in explaining the workings of our universe through an understanding of the properties and interaction of substances that make up matter. Chemistry is used to explain natural phenomena at the molecular level and is required for the creation of new materials such as medicines and polymers. Chemistry permeates numerous fields of endeavour, including agriculture, art, biochemistry, dietetics, engineering, environmental studies, food, forensic science, forestry, horticulture, law, medicine, oceanography, pharmacy and sports science.
Structure and Content
Throughout this subject, students will explore:
• The structure of atoms and how this determines their reactivity
• How the periodic table can be used to predict properties of elements
• The way atoms form compounds and molecules through studying ionic, metallic, and covalent bonding
• Why and how bonding determines the properties of materials
• A range of chemical reactions including predicting products and writing balanced chemical equations
• The structure and properties of organic molecules and how carbon compounds play a vital role in our lives
• The structure and properties of polymers and how they contribute to today’s world.
Students will also undertake several practical experiments to examine the concepts studied in the course.
