Mathematics Investigations

Purpose

Mathematics Investigations is a non-compulsory Year 10 elective unit which will run for one Semester. It is designed for those students who are planning to further their Maths education at the VCE level.

The course complements the core Mathematics subject and operates as a parallel enhancement. Consequently, the content endeavours to challenge the students to extend their existing knowledge and to deepen their understanding of how the different topics are interrelated.

To achieve these aims, the work is predominantly applied mathematics, honing students' skills to approach open-ended mathematical invstigations. The curriculum integrates algebra, measurement, space, chance, and data. There is an emphasis on the use of computers and CAS calculators and on the accurate communication of mathematical reasoning in the exploration of tasks.

Students apply their skills and knowledge in problem solving assignments, mathematical activities, and application tasks to attain the required outcomes.
