Outdoor Education

Purpose

Year 10 Outdoor Education is designed to build on the knowledge and skills developed through outdoor experiences and programs offered at DCC such as the Year 9 Wilderness Experience. The program will give students further opportunities to develop a deeper appreciation and respect for God’s creation as they will spend time exploring the different Australian environments and the relationships people have had with the land over time. Outdoor leadership will be further developed in students as they take ownership of their outdoor experiences.

Structure and Content

The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the content through learning in the classroom and outdoors. The outdoor experiences will take place in local and regional environments. Students will build on their learning that will take place in the classroom and through practical experiences, which will include an overnight camp and a 6-day snow expedition.

• Back Country snow camping 

• Cross country skiing 

• Downhill skiing 

 

Theory 

• Learning to plan and implement a significant expedition 

• Increasing awareness and understanding of environmental sustainability 

• Comparing how and why people use land in different ways 

• Connecting with the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders 

• Undertaking risk management and emergency response 

• Developing personal and social skills, expressed in the way that we relate to and care for each other.

 

*Year 9 Outdoor Education is not a pre-requisite for this subject however all students(and parents) who select this subject will be required to attend an information session where expectations and the nature of the activities will be discussed. 

 

Subject Levy: $1000 (this includes the camps and day trips but excludes food).
