Sport & Recreation

Purpose

Year 10 Sport & Recreation introduces students to the exciting world of the sport, fitness, and recreation industry. This subject provides a hands-on and practical experience, perfect for students who enjoy being active, working in teams, and learning about how sport and recreation activities are planned, managed, and delivered.

 

Students will develop skills in teamwork, leadership, communication, customer service, and planning small-scale sport and recreation events. The subject also introduces basic coaching and refereeing techniques, helping students understand the responsibilities involved in leading and managing activities in a safe and inclusive environment.

 

This subject is ideal for students considering a future in sport, fitness, coaching, outdoor recreation, or community health, and can be a valuable pathway into further VET Sport and Recreation studies.

 

Structure and Content

 

Practical Classes

The majority of learning takes place through active participation in most lessons. Students will be:

  • Delivering warm-ups, drills, and small-group coaching sessions
  • Practicing basic refereeing and officiating roles in team sports
  • Applying customer service skills during peer-led activities and simulated recreation sessions
  • Planning and running a small-scale sport or recreation activity as part of a group project
  • Engaging in real-world scenarios that develop leadership and initiative in sport settings

Theory

Students will engage in classroom-based lessons that build their understanding of the sport and recreation industry. Key areas of study include:

  • Basic coaching principles and officiating rules for selected sports
  • Communication and teamwork strategies in sport and recreation settings
  • Participate in mini-projects, such as planning and running short activities or events for peers, younger students and the wider community
  • Set up, maintain, and pack up sport and recreation equipment
  • Roles and responsibilities in the sport and recreation sector
  • Introduction to customer service and dealing with clients and participants professionally

Students will also complete short written tasks, reflections, and activity plans to reinforce learning.

 

Subject Levy: $50 (covers the cost of external providers to run coaching, refereeing and fitness instructing practicals and assessments).
