Purpose
The subject is a theme-based subject that will explore the issue of sustainability from the various disciplines that are covered in Humanities and Commerce (Geography, History, Politics, Commerce) and involve students in developing creative responses to actual problems from a local, state and global perspective.
Structure and Content
An elective designed to spark curiosity and connect student interests and passions with real-world problems. This theme-based elective is an integrated subject that involves students learning about current issues through a masterclass approach to teaching and learning. Students would be involved in a collaborative fashion to creatively develop a solution to a current, relevant environmental issue in society today. This integrated subject has a multi-faceted approach that engages student thinking across several disciplines in the humanities/commerce faculty, including geography, history, politics and business.
It will include both a theoretical and practical approach focusing on foundational concepts and skill development including:
• What is sustainability?
• What are the impacts of climate change?
• What is the history of climate politics?
• How have various governments responded to the issue of sustainability?
• How can we develop a biblically informed response to this issue?
• How do we develop a solution that is fit for purpose in response to pressing environmental issues?
This elective will develop students’ ability to think creatively and generate responses that are able to be implemented in multiple contexts, as well as their collaborative skills, research skills and critical thinking. Students will be required to engage with industry and organisations in this area, complete field trips and research and reflect on their personal practices.
