Politics

Purpose
This course focuses on politics and civics and explores the way society can be organised, who exercises power, how a nation is governed and how political, legal and economic decisions are made. The course aims to help students become active, responsible, informed citizens who have an understanding of political, social and economic processes and are able to make a positive contribution to their society and community. Students explore real social and political issues and are encouraged to take an interest in current events and debates.
Structure and Content
An inductive approach is used to explore political systems, Australian government, economic questions and how political decisions are made.
Politics at Year 10 involves five areas of study:
• Australia’s Political system
• Different political ideologies
• Democracy in Australia vs democracy in other parts of the world
• Australia’s International Relationships
• Law-making.
Themes and topics are explored by way of a series of questions and problems such as:
• How are different societies organised?
• How is Australia governed and what is expected of citizens?
• Who exercises power in countries and societies and how is this done?
• What is communism, fascism, conservatism, democracy, dictatorship?
• What role do Christians play in social and economic life? How can I make a difference?
