Literature

Purpose

The Year 10 Literature course is designed to progressively develop competence in Literature studies. Within this framework, students are given the opportunity to: 

• Study and respond to literature that presents a variety of perspectives and viewpoints 

• Appreciate literature in a range of forms such as novels, films, poetry and short stories 

• Learn the foundational concepts of literary criticism and literary theories such as post-colonialism, feminism 

• Study literary devices and concepts and learn to identify them across a variety of forms such as novel, poetry, film and short story.

Structure and Content

Literature is a semester-long subject which serves as a foundational preparation for VCE Literature. Over the course of the semester students will: 

• Read, appreciate and analyse texts across a range of forms 

• Learn the foundations of literary criticism 

• Learn the basics of literary theories such as post-colonialism and feminism 

• Learn analytical language specific to forms of literature 

• Use their understanding of literary criticism and literary theory to write and draft an analysis of texts 

• Punctuate and spell correctly 

• Speak clearly and with purpose for different contexts and audiences 

• Understand the role of the literary texts and the way that opinion and persuasion are embedded within it.
