Special House Buddy Session

Last Friday, the House Leaders and School Leaders ran a session for the Foundation students on Houses to help them get used to being in Houses for Aths Carnival (scheduled for Friday 8th August).
These student leaders did a fantastic job of introducing themselves, talking about what a 'house' is, what Aths Carnival is about, the meaning of their House name, and the values that these student leaders would like to promote at the Aths Carnival.
Then, with the support of all year 5/6 students, the leaders took all students through a craft activity to use at the Aths Carnival. Some made pom poms, others made posters, some made both, and there were even some Malva Monsters!
Next Friday, on the last day of term, there will be a whole school House session to learn and practise the chants for Aths Carnival.
Here's a photo of the House & School Leaders preparing for the session. These student leaders ran the whole hour-long session with teachers doing little more than being present. They have done such a great job of stepping up to the challenge of being leaders and attending meetings during playtimes to organise various initiatives and events.
Curious about our House names?
Birrarung Salvia: Ever flowing, representing Yarra Yarra River, the symbol is the Bush Tacka* and the Spanish colour of Salvia (Sage). (*I don't know what this is - I'm trying to find out!)
Edgars Carmin: Lateral stream flowing along the eastern edge of a lava flow representing Edgars Creek, with the symbol of the flower*, and the colour from the red okra therefore in Spanish we used Carmin (Crimson). (*it looks like a correa to me, but I'm trying to confirm)
Merri Merri Ambar: representing Merri Merri Creek, place of many rocks, with the symbols of limestone found there within and the colour of Ambar (Spanish for amber).
Darebin Celeste: Representing Darebin Creek with the symbol of the swallow that are ever present in the area and a colour Celeste (Spanish for light blue).
Kurrum Malva: Representing Plenty River using a symbol of the endangered sugar glider and a colour as unique as Newlands Malva (Spanish for Mauve).
I encourage you to read the origin story of these Houses in this attachment taken from an entry in a newsletter a few years ago.
Happy Friday!
