How to Support your Child to be a Successful Student at Edenhope College
- Establish routines: make sure the family schedule allows for time to complete homework
- Have a designated place for homework that has enough space, stationery and resources
- Check XUNO for messages from the school so you are aware of upcoming events or requirements
- Ask about the topics that your child(ren) is learning about in the different curriculum areas and have genuine conversations about what they are learning and their understanding
- Have rules around digital usage at home
- Encourage physical activity and alternate interests
- Listen to their concerns - mental health conversations need to start at a young age
- Don’t give your child excuses for not completing tasks. Time management is a skill that needs to be learnt. Homework that is due the next day only occurs if the student has not completed tasks within the allocated time at school, or they leave things to the last minute. Teachers understand family commitments and if students explain that they are time poor some weeks due to family events, especially around certain farming times, alternative arrangements can be made
- Let the school know if your child is going to be away for an extended period and work can be arranged so they don't fall behind
- Be present at school events
- Volunteer at school to show education is valuable: reading with students, MATES program, breakfast club, Parents & Friends (P & F) group, School Council, etc.
- Provide nutritious food and be aware that the whole school has a fruit break at 10am. Make sure your child has breakfast and is fueled for the day. Breakfast Club also runs each day.
- Have a consistent bed time for your child so they are able to have a refreshing sleep
- Make sure your child has jobs to do around home to learn responsibility
