Sensory Tools - Are they helping or hindering your child?

At our school, we are committed to creating inclusive classrooms that support the diverse needs of all students. One of the ways we do this is by using sensory tools—simple, purposeful items that help students regulate their emotions, focus their attention, and feel more comfortable in the learning environment.

According to educator and autism specialist Sue Larkey, sensory tools are not toys, but carefully selected resources that support students with sensory processing differences. These might include fidget items, chewable jewelry, weighted cushions, noise-cancelling headphones, or movement breaks—all designed to help students manage their sensory input and stay engaged in learning.

For some children, too much noise, light, or touch can be overwhelming, while others may seek out more sensory stimulation. Sensory tools help these students self-regulate, improve their attention and concentration, and reduce anxiety, which ultimately supports better participation and learning outcomes.

However, it is important to recognise that when used incorrectly—such as becoming a distraction to the student or those around them—sensory tools can hinder learning. As Sue Larkey notes, tools that are misused or treated like toys can shift focus away from learning. That’s why we set clear expectations for how these tools are used and provide explicit teaching and supervision to ensure they serve their intended purpose.

The use of sensory tools is always individualised and thoughtfully integrated into a student’s learning plan. Our staff are trained to observe and understand students’ needs and work closely with families and support teams to find the right strategies.

By embedding sensory supports thoughtfully and intentionally, we are not only helping individual students thrive—we are also building a more inclusive, supportive school community.

Sensory tools for students who have them are recommended to us by trained clinicians and professionals as a support tool to help them through the day. If you are providing your child with a sensory tool, please ensure you have consulted with your child's teacher
