Students Achievements

VCE Dance Assessment

As part of their VCE Dance assessment, our talented Year 11 and 12 students choreographed original routines, selected music, and brought their vision to life on stage at the ‘Elements’ Dance Concert last week.

Friends and families got to come and enjoy some great performances from both VCE dance students and some awesome volunteers who added to the entertainment for the night.

The Way to Freedom Wins at MFF 2025

GSSC Wins Prestigious Award for Powerful Refugee Documentary at Multicultural Film Festival

We are incredibly proud to announce that The Way to Freedom (Part 1: The Journey), a heartfelt documentary created by over 350 students and staff from Greater Shepparton Secondary College, has won the Chairperson’s Refugee Stories Award 2025 at this year’s Multicultural Film Festival !

What started as a school project has grown into an award-winning documentary, recognised by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and selected from over 1,275 entries across Victoria. The film was officially screened on Thursday 19 June 2025 at ACMI Cinemas in Melbourne, as part of Refugee Week.

Written and directed by our very own Hussam Saraf (Sammy), Multicultural Liaison Officer at GSSC, and co-produced with filmmaker Darryl McConnell, The Way to Freedom tells the powerful, deeply personal stories of refugee families seeking safety in Australia. It follows their journeys from conflict zones to their first moments in our country, especially highlighting the role schools like GSSC play in supporting their new beginnings.

“This film is more than just a project, it's a movement. A message of resilience, hope, and the healing power of community and education,” said Mr Saraf.

The project gave voice to students and families whose stories often go untold. It is a tribute to the strength and courage of refugee communities and the compassion and unity within our school and broader Shepparton community.

Our film not only received the Chairperson’s Refugee Stories Award but also earned an Official Selection Certificate, further recognising the incredible effort and impact of the documentary.

A small group of GSSC staff attended the screening and awards ceremony in Melbourne, proudly representing the many hands and hearts that contributed to the film. To every student who bravely shared their story, and to every staff member who supported behind the scenes, this award belongs to you.

We extend our deepest thanks to the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Swinburne University, and the Multicultural Film Festival 2025 team for this tremendous honour.
