Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,

Welcome back to Term 3. We have a busy term ahead with many activities prepared for our students.  Some of the events to look forward to this term include:

  • Year 3 Camp
  • Year 4 Camp
  • Year 5 Camp
  • 100 Days of Prep Celebration
  • Whole College Book Week dress-up day (get your costumes ready!) with the theme being 'Book an Adventure'
  • Our College Production 'Rock of Ages'
  • Whole College Father's Day Breakfast
  • Primary Years Father's Day Stall
  • Whole College Footy Day

Perceptual Motor Skills (PMP)

We are pleased to have commenced the PMP program this term for Prep and Year 1 students. This program is a valuable opportunity for our students and helps build connections within their classes with peers and staff. It is a structured approach to movement and sensory experiences designed to enhance a child's understanding of themselves and their world. It supports student wellbeing and development through body awareness, spatial awareness, movement and direction. Students attend their weekly sessions with their class teacher and student wellbeing leader.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

On our curriculum day this term, our staff collaborated on our whole College behaviour framework SWPBS to review our current documentation and practices to evaluate areas that we can continue to focus on. It was wonderful to see all staff across the College collaborate for this work, including teaching staff, education support staff, including maintenance and administration and leadership. SWPBS is part of our Annual Improvement Plan.

Entry to Year Level Assemblies at the PAC

For parents who attend the College for year level assemblies, I would like to ask you to enter the Performing Arts Centre on the Eminence Boulevard side of the College. There is a waiting area located outside the door that does not intrude on the student areas. Due to child safety, visitors to the College are encouraged to enter via the main entrances across our College, so that they are not on the grounds within student areas. We appreciate your help with this. Staff will open the entrance when the classes arrive for their assembly.

Student Online Chat Groups

We are continuing to see issues arise from student's online social interaction via chat groups outside of school. These issues then impact student's friendships and daily interactions at school. Inappropriate communication online causes distress and impacts the wellbeing and safety of others. Please continue conversations at home with your children regarding safe internet use. The following prompts may be of assistance.

  • Do they know how to deal with negative experiences on social media by help-seeking and not becoming involved?
  • Do they know how to report inappropriate use, such as cyberbullying or content that is not appropriate?

At our College, we ensure that we have an ICT agreement and Department policies in place to protect and support safe digital technology use. We continue to provide education to our students around safe digital technology use through our classroom programs and via external services such as Kids Help Line, Brainstorm Productions and KidsFirst.

We are proud to note that many students are becoming upstanders by help-seeking and discouraging poor online behaviour, however we are still concerned that there are continued occasions of unacceptable behaviour being brought to our attention. For any concerning online behaviour, including cyberbullying, reports can also be made to the eSafety Commissioner. https://www.esafety.gov.au/report/forms

Kids Helpline for 5 to 25 year olds. Confidential phone counselling is available all day, every day. Online chat available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Students on College Grounds After School

We have noticed a number of students remainingng at our College to play or catch up with friends at the end of the school day. Please note that yard duty supervision finishes at 3:15 pm and at this time, teachers will ask students to head to their pick-up point or to make their way home.

We understand that some students may have phones in the upper years and may be contacting their parent/carer after school however, we discourage students from being on their phones or personal devices within the school grounds for other purposes.

Please support us with this by reminding your child to leave by this time if they are making their own way home due to safety and to keep phones in their bags unless they are calling a parent/carer.

Prep Enrolments 2026. It is not too late to enrol for Prep 2026.

Acceptance letters are being prepared, and families will be notified shortly of their 2026 placement. If you know of anyone seeking enrolment for their child for Prep 2026, we are running Prep tours, which you can book here: trybooking.com/CYWUX. For more information, please visit our website at hgc.vic.edu.au or give us a call at 9717 7500
