Visual Arts

In Visual Arts this week, all students have started to learn about threads and textiles. They learnt or were reminded how to weave paper, leading to creating a paper weaving mat. This will help the 3 to 6 students with other weaving / looming projects. Year 3/4 students were able to decorate their radial (round) loom, ready to start weaving. Year 5/6 students were able to make up their loom board by threading the warp (main strings on the loom board).Β

Due to Year 5/6 students being on camp last term they were unable to finish their Keith Haring sculptures where they just had to add marks/lines to their base. They also started their air-dried lantern clay art piece. Starting with a slab of clay, rolling it to the correct thickness and length and then cutting/carving holes in it to create windows. They then wrap the clay around a cardboard tube and by using joining skills, make a cylinder. Students then had the option to add a top to their lantern or any other extra features.Β

Culture StudiesΒ

Last week in Culture Studies, students continued to learn about the Polynesian culture. They were able to locate where Polynesia is, which islands make up Polynesia, they could alsoΒ identify the Polynesian triangle,Β what Polynesia means (The word Polynesia comes from the Greek words β€˜poly’, which means many and β€˜nesia’, which means islands) and the migration of the Polynesian culture. Students were able to choose one of the Polynesian Islands flags to colour. All students were able to understand the significance of the β€˜Lei’ and what it means for Hawaiian / Polynesian culture. A Lei is constructed of flowers, leaves, seashells, seeds, nuts, feathers or even bones of various animals and these days lollies or chocolates. A Lei isΒ a common symbol of love, respect, friendship, celebration, honour or greeting. Students were then able to make their own Lei by threading paper flowers onto a piece of yarn.Β

PE

As we returned back to term 4, students have started learning and playing the game of Badminton. A very fun and active sport, played in a small space allowing everyone to play. All students began by watching some elite games and understanding how the game plays. They were then able to have a go, by first learning to be respectful of the equipment and then being shown how to hold the racquets with correct grip. They were shown how to play a forehand, backhand and smash. Students in Years 3-6 used a birdie (shuttle cock) while students in Foundation to Year 2 used balloons to help them learn.

It was impressive to see how quickly everyone picked up the skills and had success.Β  Β

Health

In Health we have continued to work through the Department of Educations; Reslience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program. This has been the focus of Health for the year, and as we head into term 4 we are coming towards the end of the program. Topic 7: Gender and Identity and Topic 8: Positive Gender Relations is how the program finishes. Β

The evidence based data around these topics and the reason why we teach these include:Β

The early school years are a critical time to challenge stereotypes based on gender and other differences. It is useful to do explicit work with children to acknowledge, explore and celebrate diverse identities. This helps them realise that their likes and dislikes do not have to be limited by their gender or any other characteristics and that their preferences and interest can change and evolve over time.

Β

We have continued to have some great discussions around these topics and the students have enjoyed learning more about themselves and their classmates.

Division Athletics

Last term we had a number of students compete at the Kingston District Athletics carnival. Both Lucy G and Seb from Year 6 finished first or second which saw them move through to the next round which was Division Athletics, which was held last Friday 6th Oct.Β

Both did extremely well, with Lucy finishing 3rd in the girls under 11 100m race and Seb finishing 5th in the boys under 12’s Shot Put.Β

Congratulations to both students, we are very proud of your efforts.
