VHAP English and Maths Enrichment

The Victorian High-Ability Program is a 10-week extension course where select students meet with like-minded peers at neighbouring Victorian government schools through weekly virtual WebEx lessons. The weekly virtual lessons occur during the school day and are taught by expert Virtual School Victoria educators. The aims of the program are to promote the “development of key skills such as teamwork, collaboration and resilience. The program is a safe space for high-ability students to stretch their wings, encounter change and challenge, and confront fears around making mistakes.” The final tenth session is a Masterclass designed for the VHAP students to meet face to face with their like-minded peers.

Throughout 2023, Camelot Rise has hosted three VHAP Masterclasses for our neighbourhood schools. This has seen more than 90 students from Year 5 and 6 across Jells Park, Highvale, Glen Waverley South and Syndal South come together to celebrate their learning with some engaging Maths and English activities. Later this term we will host a final English Masterclass for the 2023 VHAP students.

Where in the World

On Thursday 14th September, all the Grade 5 and 6 students presented their expo they had been working on for the last six weeks. We started our work by choosing a country to focus on. Then, we went into the process of researching deeper about the country. We could either work in pairs or by ourselves. During this time, we thought about our presentation and how we were going to present our work. After that, we started to print out our research. We were told to paste our work onto a coloured piece of paper then put that onto foam boards. If we were working in a pair we got btwo pairs of A3 boards, whereas if we worked by ourselves, we got one pair of A3 boards. On the day of the expo, we got separated into different classrooms based on our continent.

It was a fun day of competition with all our students putting in a great performance. Isla and Thomas will now compete at the Eastern Metropolitan Region Competition next week. Good luck.
