Dear parents/carers,

This week I would like to share how we teach phonics as part of our literacy curriculum.

Phonics helps students understand the relationship between letters and sounds, supporting them to blend sounds to read words and segment sounds to spell and write. At Jacana School for Autism, we use the Little Learners Love Literacy program, which provides structured and explicit phonics instruction.

Teaching is differentiated so all students can access phonics learning. Students with verbal language skills practise blending and segmenting sounds to read and write words and sentences. Students who use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices also develop phonics knowledge using specialised apps that allow them to hear sounds and build words and sentences through their communication systems.

It has been wonderful to see students making strong progress this term. Seeing students reading, writing and creating words and sentences using their AAC devices has been a highlight.

All teachers have been trained in the program to ensure a consistent approach across classrooms.

Please check your class Seesaw posts to see examples of this learning. If you would like further information or ideas for supporting phonics at home, please contact your child’s teacher or myself.

Kind regards,

Stefania
