Celebrating Harmony Week in Our Libraries

This week our libraries have been vibrant hubs of activity as we celebrated Harmony Week. This important week provides an opportunity to recognise and embrace the cultural diversity that makes our community so rich, while reinforcing values of respect, inclusion and belonging.

In the Senior School Library, students were invited to grab a passport and travel to each continent, collecting a book at each stop. This activity encouraged students to explore voices, stories and perspectives from different cultures, broadening their understanding of the world and fostering empathy through reading.

Meanwhile, in the Middle School Library, in library lessons we discussed books which focused on refugee experiences, culture, inclusion, diversity and kindness. These stories sparked meaningful conversations and helped students reflect on the importance of understanding and respecting others. At lunchtime, the library has been a lively and creative space, with students enjoying Harmony Day-themed crosswords, word searches, and bookmark colouring activities. A highlight has been the acrostic poetry competition, where students have expressed thoughtful and inspiring ideas about harmony and belonging.

Why do we celebrate Harmony Week in the library?

Libraries are uniquely positioned to be spaces of connection, curiosity and inclusion. Through stories, students can encounter lives and experiences beyond their own, helping to build compassion and global awareness. Celebrating Harmony Week in the library allows us to intentionally promote these values, encouraging students to appreciate diversity, challenge stereotypes, and recognise the importance of kindness and respect in our community. We are proud to see so many students engaging enthusiastically in these activities and embracing the spirit of Harmony Week.
