Monash Council Recycling Education Program for Schools

As part of the whole-school Inquiry units focused on sustainability and caring for the environment, Monash Council delivered educational sessions to students across all year levels during the first few days of Term 2. These sessions included interactive workshops on waste, recycling, and reducing food waste.

The following sessions were presented:

• Wonderful Waste: Students examined the impacts of waste and learned how to correctly sort items into appropriate bins. The session also explored the importance of recycling and what happens to waste after it is collected.
• Recycling Rules: Students explored the recycling process, including where materials originate and how recycling supports the environment. They developed an understanding of how different material streams are sorted and processed.
• Closing the Loop: Students investigated the ‘take–make–waste’ model and the environmental impacts of landfill. They discussed ways to live more sustainably by applying the 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose (or Repair), and Recycle.
• Students also received a booklet from the council to reinforce and extend the practices introduced during the sessions.

As part of our sustainability actions, Monash council is encouraging residents to plant indigenous species to not only beautify their surroundings but also support local wildlife and contribute to climate mitigation. Monash residents are eligible to receive free indigenous plants for their own gardens (up to 40 plants) and their nature strips (up to 50 plants).
