What does mathematics look like beyond the classroom walls?

At Mount Alvernia College, we want students to see mathematics not just as numbers on a page, but as a way of thinking, questioning and making sense of the world around them.

In every year level, our Mathematics Department focuses on building strong foundations while encouraging students to ask why, test ideas, and explore different ways to solve problems. Through explicit teaching, guided practice and timely feedback, students are supported to grow in confidence and independence, no matter their starting point.

Families play an important role by connecting Math to real life. Simple conversations about learning, encouraging regular practice, and revisiting class resources help make thinking visible at home.

2. Course Page on MyMTA provides learning materials for the whole course. It also houses “The Assessment Help” tab that provides formula sheets and revision materials suitable for the entire subject. Parents and students can access this page.

3. Class Page on MyMTA is where the classroom teacher shares class information with their students. Students should use their term planner to stay organised and on track. The Class page may include announcements, homework, reminders, and a place to submit work or view feedback.

4. Class OneNote is a vital tool that captures daily lessons so students can revisit explanations, worked examples, and annotations to consolidate learning. This is especially valuable for students who are absent, allowing them to access individual lessons.

5. Textbook is available to all students where every worked example has a supporting step-by-step video demonstration.

6. Academic Mentoring is available for all students on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays after school; no bookings required.  The schedule is available on the Academics Tile on MyMtA.

Together, by working in partnership and using these supports, we can build confident, capable learners who see mathematics as meaningful - both inside and beyond the classroom.
