Co-Curricular at MAG

WOW!
What an intense two weeks of sport at Moama Anglican Grammar. To put it into context, our students, staff, and parents have done a combined total of 5,745 km on planes, buses, and automobiles, as well as 2 km walking.
The list includes: CIS Swimming (Sydney), Victorian School Associations Competition (VSAC) Swimming (Melbourne), Border Independent Secondary Schools Association BISSA Cross Country (Narrandera), Riverina Anglican Schools (RAS) Cross Country (Jindera), Independent Country Co-Educational Schools (ICCES Athletics) (Melbourne), NSW Basketball (Wagga), Secondary Netball (Albury), Soccer (Deniliquin), CIS Netball (Sydney), AFL Football (Albury), and last but not least, Primary Soccer (Moama).
A huge thank you is due to the staff who have gone above their daily duties to give up time to attend these events, many of which have meant days away, or early starts and late finishes.
Thank you also to the parents who have committed to taking their students to Sydney and Melbourne to enable them to have these wonderful experiences.
We will also continue over the next two weeks with students travelling to Wagga Wagga to represent CIS in the State Championship in Lawn Bowls, Albury for the NSW Primary Netball Cup, Sydney for the NSW All Schools Swimming, and Port Macquarie to represent CIS in the NSW All Schools. We wish all of these students and parents safe travels.
Riverina Anglican Schools (RAS) Cross Country: A Breakthrough Victory
In a week of firsts, this is one of the best. In the 16-year history of RAS, we have never won an event, but now Moama Anglican Grammar has got the chocolates. In an awesome team display, all students ran their hearts out, especially up the steep finishing hill. Thanks to the staff who attended and assisted with the day: Jack Davy (apparently the best key pusher in the business), Mrs Deller, Mr Harris, and Mrs Moore.

Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Swimming Championships: Strong Performances on the Big Stage
Twelve students made the journey to the Sydney Aquatic Centre to represent RAS at the Combined Independent School Championships. The event is run over two days, with the relays and freestyle on the first night. Our students performed admirably, and we had some PBs in the relay legs, which was a great achievement. All students who competed in these teams should be very proud of their efforts and their willingness to participate on the big stage against the large private schools from NSW.
On Day 2, we had some excellent individual results. The highlight was the performance of Luca Caniglia in the Boys 15 and Under 100 m Breaststroke, who finished 2nd overall and has been selected in the CIS team to swim at the NSW All Schools Championships later in the month.

The NSW CIS Swimming Championships, held on 4 and 5 May, were a great showcase of talent and determination. Athletes from across the region competed at a high level in an outstanding environment at the Sydney Olympic Pool.
The event was filled with strong performances and many close races. The atmosphere was energetic and supportive, with swimmers pushing themselves to achieve personal bests. Throughout both individual and team events, students were supported within a strong team environment.
PBs were achieved by several students, and an outstanding effort by Luca Caniglia saw him win a silver medal, making him the only MAG student to progress to the next level, the All Schools Championships, to be held later this month at the Sydney Olympic Pool. Overall, the event was a success, highlighting both individual effort and team spirit in and out of the pool.
Additionally, Remi, Luca, and Charlotte all achieved top five finishes in a number of events.

Border Independent Secondary Schools Association (BISSA) Cross Country
A great day at the Narrandera Racecourse for the BISSA Cross Country. We had some amazing results; however, all students who attended and represented our school should be extremely proud of their efforts. It was a challenging course, and all students did a great job to complete it.
Thank you to Mrs Moore, Miss Aquino, and Mr Trent Gray for their efforts on this trip.
A huge congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the CIS Cross Country in Sydney in June.

Netball NSW Schools Cup: Strong Start to the Season
Netball season began on 5 May with four teams competing in the NSW Schools Cup. Two Year 7/8 teams and two Year 9/10 teams had an early start in preparation for a day of tournament play.
The teams competed against The Scots School Albury, Albury High School, Xavier College Wagga, St Paul’s College, Corowa/Rutherglen, Trinity College Albury, and Murray High School.
Two of the four teams have qualified for Phase 2 at Wagga in September. The Year 7/8 team lost only one game, while the Year 9/10 team won all games.
All who participated on the day represented the school, following all school values.
Thank you to all the staff who attended and helped with coaching: Mrs Lees, Ms Bowman, and a special mention to Trent Gray, ably assisted by Mia Wickham (who was injured so could not play herself).
Thank you to Renea Harris, Sharon Moon, and Brenda Stenning, who umpired so well and took on extra games as we were short one umpire.
Date of Phase 2 to be confirmed.
U16 Basketball Teams Shine at Basketball NSW Schools Tournament
On 5 May, the Moama Anglican Grammar U16 Girls and U16 Boys Basketball teams travelled to Wagga Wagga to compete in the Basketball NSW Schools Tournament. Both teams represented the school with outstanding sportsmanship, determination, and skill throughout an exciting day of high-quality basketball.
The competition was fierce, with every game being tightly contested and played at a high standard. Both teams demonstrated excellent teamwork, resilience, and composure under pressure against strong opposition from across the region.
The U16 Boys team had an exceptional tournament campaign, progressing all the way through to the grand final. After a series of impressive performances, the boys faced Kildare Catholic College in a thrilling decider. Despite a courageous effort, the team narrowly went down in a hard-fought grand final, finishing runners-up after an outstanding day of basketball.
The U16 Girls team also enjoyed tremendous success, remaining undefeated throughout the entire tournament. The girls played with confidence and intensity all day, culminating in a fantastic grand final victory against Kildare Catholic College. Their teamwork, defensive pressure, and skill execution were outstanding, earning them the tournament championship title.
Congratulations to both teams on their fantastic achievements and the way they represented Moama Anglican Grammar. We wish the girls’ team the very best of luck as they prepare to compete at the State Championships!
Bill Turner Cup – Secondary Boys
Our secondary boys competed in a tough Bill Turner Cup soccer game in Deniliquin. Sadly, we lost (7–1); however, the boys played extremely well in the second half (1–1). The boys represented our school extremely well and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. We are looking forward to our next opportunity for the boys to play together again.
Victorian School Associations Competition (VSAC) Swimming
We had three students selected in our first ICCES team that competed at the Victorian School Associations Competition (VSAC). Here, we competed against other independent school associations across Victoria. Our team and students performed well, finishing 12th overall out of 14 associations. The highly resourced APS association took out the title. Congratulations to Charlotte Wilson, Jack Hawkins, and Luca Caniglia, who performed very well on the night.

Campaspe Soccer Tournament: A Day of Teamwork and Determination
On Friday 9 May, our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Campaspe Soccer Tournament, accompanied by Justin Minchin, Paige Pinson, Meg Carr, and Trent Gray, who coached the teams throughout the day. The school was proudly represented by a boys’ team, a girls’ team, and two mixed teams across a full day of competition.
Students demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination as they competed against schools from the area. Although our teams did not come away with an overall win, the boys’ team achieved an outstanding result, finishing third overall for the day.
All students represented the school with pride and integrity, showing great encouragement and support for one another both on and off the field. It was fantastic to see students displaying positive attitudes, resilience, and strong school spirit throughout the competition. Overall, it was a fantastic day of competition, camaraderie, and school spirit for everyone involved.
NSW Junior AFL Schools Cup Regional Playoffs
On Tuesday, 12 May, our Years 7–9 AFL Football teams travelled to Lavington Sports Ground in Albury to compete in the NSW Junior AFL Schools Cup Regional Playoffs against strong opposition schools from across the region.
Our boys’ team had an outstanding day, finishing with three wins and one loss. The boys played with great intensity, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the carnival. Their effort and commitment around the contest were excellent, and they represented the school with pride both on and off the field. The standout performers for the boys across the day were Charlie Flanigan, Nate Murphy, Mason Mundie, and Jesse Nye, who all consistently impacted games with their effort and skill.
While our girls’ team did not come away with a win on the scoreboard, they showed tremendous determination, resilience, and improvement across the day. The girls continued to learn and develop each game and consistently demonstrated fantastic MAG spirit through their encouragement, teamwork, and positive attitude. Special mention goes to Paige and Ebony Pattern, Violet McGillivray, Maddi Kerr, and Sienna Weeks, who were outstanding contributors throughout the carnival.
A huge congratulations to all students involved for the way they represented our school. Thank you also to the staff and supporters who helped make the day such a success.
Equestrian Success at Horseland Bendigo Interschools
Congratulations to MAG Equestrian Squad member and Year 6 student, Elsie Stevens, who represented the school proudly at the Horseland Bendigo Interschools Equestrian Showjumping Day, hosted by Girton Grammar School. Riding her pony, Bella, Elsie jumped two clear rounds and achieved an outstanding result, placing 2nd in both of her 50 cm classes and being awarded Reserve Champion. Elsie exemplifies grit and determination in her riding, and we are incredibly proud of her achievements and the way she represented Moama Anglican Grammar.
Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Netball Tournament: Determination on Display in Sydney
Homebush, Sydney, was the site of the CIS Secondary Tournament. Rose Williams, Olivia Frazer, Quinn Downward, Pippa Leeds, and Luella Williams represented Riverina Anglican Schools (RAS) in the 15 and Under competition, while Hannah Downward and Jinaya Nurse were members of the 19 and Under team.
What a gruelling day. The girls arrived at 8 am, warmed up, and proceeded to play five matches. Each match was four 10-minute quarters, with only 15 minutes between each game for them to refuel and rehydrate.
Each team was competitive in every match and was able to win some games against outstanding athletes.
Congratulations to all girls for the grit and determination they showed while representing our school throughout the day. A special mention to Quinn Downward, who was amongst the final 20 athletes selected to play in the final round of selection. Unfortunately, Quinn did not make the final team of 12 to represent CIS at the next level.
Foundation Day Games: A Celebration of Spirit and Participation
A huge congratulations to our students, whose energy and enthusiasm brought the day to life through our Annual Foundation Day Games activities. From the much-loved Foundation Day Gift to the always fiercely contested tug of war, the spirit of participation, House pride, and connection was evident throughout the day.
