Year 9 Science: Exploring the Human Brain
Students got to take part in a really interesting and educational experience—a human brain dissection session—as part of their Year 9 Science classes. This hands-on activity allowed them to get up close and personal with the brain's structure and different areas, which helped them better understand how the nervous system works.
NSW Parliament School Leadership Program
Aleisha Moon and Andrew Barber participated in the Parliament of NSW School Leadership Program, which was held on Thursday, 7 May 2026 at NSW Parliament House and Government House in Sydney. This program is jointly conducted by the Parliament of NSW and Government House and has been running for over 20 years. It provides Year 12 student leaders with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australia’s system of government, parliamentary processes, and civic responsibilities. Students also had the chance to engage with Members of Parliament and learn about the role of the Governor of NSW.
My trip to New South Wales Parliament was a valuable experience that gave me a greater understanding of leadership, government, and the role Parliament plays in our society. On the first day, we flew from Melbourne to Sydney and checked into our accommodation.
The following day, we attended the NSW Parliament Leadership Day. We walked to Parliament House and were seated in an auditorium alongside around 100 other student leaders from schools across New South Wales. During the day, we listened to several Members of Parliament who represented our local areas. They shared their perspectives on leadership and spoke about the importance of understanding and responding to the needs of the people they represent. I found it particularly interesting to hear about their careers before entering Parliament, as many of them came from ordinary professional backgrounds before pursuing politics.
One of the highlights of the day was observing Question Time in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. It was fascinating to see how the opposition challenges the government by questioning decisions and policies, while government members ask questions that allow the Premier to highlight achievements and respond positively. Watching these debates helped me better understand how Parliament functions and how laws and legislation are discussed at a state level.
After Parliament House, we visited Government House, where we learned about the role of the Governor. Governor Margaret Beazley addressed us and explained her responsibilities, including signing legislation on behalf of the monarchy and attending community events across the state. I found it insightful to hear how much she values visiting regional and disadvantaged communities.
On the final day, we explored Circular Quay and The Rocks, and briefly visited the Sydney campus of the University of Newcastle before flying home to Melbourne. Overall, the trip was a highly valuable experience that strengthened my understanding of leadership, government, and civic responsibility.

Beacon Career Expo
On Tuesday 12 May, our Year 9 students attended the Beacon Career Expo, where they had the opportunity to explore a wide range of future career pathways and industries. Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of interactive workshops and presentations led by industry representatives, training organisations, and employers.
The expo encouraged students to begin thinking about their future goals, interests, and strengths while gaining valuable insight into the many pathways available after school, including university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment opportunities. Students were able to ask questions, engage with professionals, and learn more about the skills and qualifications required across different industries.
The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to build career awareness and develop a deeper understanding of the connection between education, employability skills, and future career success. We thank the Beacon Foundation, presenters, exhibitors, and staff who helped make the event such a valuable experience for our students.
