Your Parent Candidates 2024

Natalie Isborn

I am currently a parent member of the school council and finance committee member. During the last two years' on the council I have represented parents as part of the school review as well as during council and committee meetings, and have enjoyed being able to contribute to the school in this way, and would love to continue to do so. I am a graduate from Monash University, having completed a BA(Hons)/ LLB in 1996. I achieved honours in psychology as part of a BA, which was run by the science department at the time and helped develop my interest in all things scientific. I went on to have a career in law, working in Australia, and then for 11 years in Europe. My children, Jesper (JMSS year 12) and Lillie (both 17) and Alexandra (14) were all born in Sweden. While living abroad I earned an MBA at Warwick Business School (England) to further develop my business leadership skills. I have extensive experiencein corporate governance and risk, financial analysis and strategy, having been the head of equity investments (M&A) in a large corporation. I am a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and have been the chair and/or a director of more numerous companies. I currently work as a lawyer and as a business structuring consultant. It is that unique skill set which I hope has been, and can continue to be, of use to JMSS. I have previously been on a primary school council and sat on the policy committee. I enjoy being able to share my knowledge with others and have volunteered as a lawyer and as a mentor since I left high school. I believe it is important to listen and leteveryone have an opportunity to be heard. I approach issues with integrity and patience while focusing on finding asolution.

Joshua Ooi

I am an Associate Professor at Monash University where I lead a medical research team focussing on developingnew treatments for autoimmune diseases. My work in this field recently led to me receiving the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation. I strongly believe in inspiring the next generation of scientists and I do this through lecturing and teaching at university, as well as routinely hosting Year 10 work experience students in my lab. I have previously served on the School Council of my daughter's primary school and look forward to contributing to JMSS in any way possible.

Phoebe Sherwin

My name is Phoebe Sherwin. I began my career as a primary school teacher in Australia, the UK, and the Middle East, but I've since transitioned to roles crucial to public health, now serving as the Procurement Manager at Epworth Group of Hospitals, following my involvement in the COVID-19 State Supply Chain at Monash Health. My journey is grounded in a dedication to education and community. My daughter graduated from JMSS in 2023 and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Monash University, while my youngest child recently gained acceptance into Year 10, prompting me to reflect on the importance of giving back to educational institutions. Over the years, I've served on school council as a teacher, led parent committees, and organized fundraisers, including securing a Council grant for Scout Jamboree 2021. I've also participated in initiatives like the Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising $3,500,  and the JMSS Regional Student Exchange in 2018, showcasing my commitment to fundraising and supporting educational endeavours. Now, as my son embarks on his educational journey at JMSS , I would very much like to contribute to his new school community.

 

Ali Moradiamani

My name is Ali Moradiamani, and I am an Electrical Engineer with a passion for empowering the next generation of science leaders. Currently, I am a Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University, specializing in integrating renewable energy solutions like electric vehicles (EVs) into power grids. I am also the technical manager of the RMIT EV Living Lab, and deeply invested in translating research into practical applications.

As an immigrant who arrived in Australia in 2015, I understand the transformative power of education. Since completing my PhD in 2020, I have served as a lecturer/researcher at both Swinburne and RMIT universities, fostering student development in STEM fields. My research stands at the corner of electrical engineering and applied mathematics, and focuses on building sustainable solutions for the future.

Witnessing the global shift towards renewable energy, I believe science schools like JMSS play a crucial role. The challenges and opportunities presented by this transition demand a well-equipped workforce. I am committed to supporting JMSS in preparing its brilliant students to navigate this exciting future by:

  • Sharing my expertise in renewable energy and innovation.
  • Promoting STEM education and career pathways.
  • Advocating for inclusive and equitable access to science learning.

Joining the JMSS School Council would allow me to contribute meaningfully to the school's vibrant community and empower the next generation of science pioneers.

Piyush Arora

I am writing to express my keen interest in joining the Parent Council at John Monash Science School.

Over the course of my parenting journey and active participation in diverse community endeavours, I have cultivated a profound comprehension of the significance of collaboration among parents, educators, and students. I am deeply enthusiastic about championing the needs and interests of our students, and I am dedicated to collaborating closely with the school administration to guarantee that each student attains the utmost educational experience.

If elected to the Parent Council, I will endeavour to:

·         Engage in community collaboration to effectively tackle any obstacles or issues that our school may encounter and strive to develop practical resolutions.

·         Encouraging our fundraising campaign aimed at improving instructional resources and expanding extracurricular options for our students.

·         Facilitate transparent lines of communication among parents, educators, and school administration.

A bit about myself:

An Australian Citizen, CPA Australia Member; master’s in business and master’s in finance; currently working for a State Railway department as Business Advisor. 

I have had the privilege of leading and participating in various Not for profit organisations management boards and committees.

Proud husband to a Kindergarten Teacher (Educator) and parent to 2 Children, year 10 and year 6.

 

Ben Waterson

My name is Ben and my son Dean is in Year 10. I was a council member several years ago when Dean's older brother was at JMSS.

Being a school council member is crucial for fostering a supportive and enriching educational environment. As a former member, I understand the pivotal role that council plays in shaping school policies, allocating resources, and advocating for the needs of students, teachers, and parents.

My previous experience equips me with valuable insights into the intricacies of council's functions, enabling me tohit the ground running and make meaningful contributions from day one.

Moreover, as I am a lawyer, I can add a layer of expertise that is immensely beneficial to council's operations. My legal knowledge enables me to navigate applicable regulations, contracts, and potential liabilities with confidence, ensuring that council makes informed decisions that prioritise the best interests of the school community.

If I am elected as a school council member, the school community ensures continuity and stability while alsogaining access to invaluable legal counsel.

I am committed to serving the school and its community, listening to any issues raised, and to fostering a positivelearning environment for all.

 

Vivyan Ying

At the students and parents information evening, I realised why my son was so determined for the JMSS entry. JMSS is to develop students the skills, attributes, knowledge and balanced perspectives,and most importantly nurturing the science minded students striving their personal best. Apart fromaccess to the world class facilities, the friendly and thoughtful teachers and staff make us feelwelcomed and belonged. It is a privilege to be part of the school council in supporting the studentsJ MSS journey. Having a science background helps the linking with JMSS vision and values. With my experience inthe building industry both commercial and residential, I hope my connections with the professional trades would benefit the renovation and maintenance projects such as the wellbeing area upgrade. I am endeavour to participate in the fund raising events for upgrading the school resources and facilities.With great enthusiasm and passion, I believe I can be a valuable member of the JMSS school council.
