NAPLAN

NAPLAN - Year 7 & 9

At Mount Eliza Secondary College our focus is for all students to be Happy, Smart and Prepared, both in school and out in the community. One of the measures of student growth that teachers at the College can use to inform their teaching are individual and cohort NAPLAN assessment data to track how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy.

This year the NAPLAN tests are being conducted for all Year 7&9 students earlier than previous years. The testing window for 2024 commences on Wednesday 13th March and finishes on Monday 25th March. During this time, all students in Years 7&9 will complete 4 tests – Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

All NAPLAN tests for years 7&9 students are completed online, so all students will need to have their own device and ensure that they have the Lock Down Browser (LDB) installed. For most students this will happen automatically, however a few students may need to visit this ICT knowledgebase article and follow the steps to install the LDB on their device:

https://kb.mesc.vic.edu.au:9443/kb/locked-down-browser-installation . Can families please check that the LDB is installed on each student’s device. Students will all need to provide their own set of headphones. Can you please ensure that your students have their own set of headphones and have checked that they work with their device prior to the tests.

We will be conducting the practice tests over weeks 3 to 5 to enable students to be familiar with logging into and using the LDB and the NAPLAN platform.

All students are encouraged to access the NAPLAN public demonstration site at https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/public-demonstration-site .

· Students can then access some practice questions for the different tests and trial using the different tools that are available for students to use during the different tests.

· Students can also trial the different colour themes and visual alternative questions available.

· If students and parents feel that the different colour themes or visual alternate questions would assist their student, then they are encouraged to contact the College’s Disability and Inclusion Learning Specialist Sean Hogarth to discuss further (shogarth@mesc.vic.edu.au )by Friday March 8th.

· Further support can be arranged for students with a disability if a student regularly uses similar support in classrooms assessment tasks. Families of these students are encouraged to contact Sean to discuss their individual needs.

The College encourages all students in years 7 & 9 to sit and complete all the NAPLAN tests to the best of their ability on the day. Students may be withdrawn from some or all the NAPLAN tests by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the NAPLAN coordinators. If you wish to withdraw your student from some or all of the tests, please get in touch with Olivia Stephens at ostephens@mesc.vic.edu.au
