Years 7 and 8 Reading Celebration
Last term, we had a competition to see which English class could log the most minutes of reading time. It was a fiercely-fought battle with the leaderboard changing weekly.
Ultimately, Mrs Broughton’s Year 7 ENGABG and Year 8 ENGCDG proved to be the valiant winners!
The winning teams were allowed to choose a theme and activity to celebrate. The Year 7 winners chose a Bluey-themed party, with fun quizzes, a short game of ‘Keepie Uppie’ and Bluey inspired food, while the Year 8 winners chose a Taylor Swift party with a McSmart meal.
The School also achieved a Trailblazer badge from Beanstack (the program we use to record the reading) to celebrate our effective use of the program to build a culture of reading at Kilvington.
Olympic Reading Challenge
The Games have begun! For the next two weeks, our Junior School students are encouraged to read books related to an Olympic sport.
On Monday 12 August, two winners will be drawn: one from Prep to Year 2 and one from Years 3 to 6. Each winner will receive a beautiful Paris 2024 Olympics Plush Mascot.
Find all the details of the Challenge in the attachments below. Happy reading!
Kilvington Book Week: Reading is Magic
The Kilvington Book Week is fast approaching! It will be running from 19 to 23 August with the theme 'Reading is Magic'.
READING IS MAGIC
In Library lessons, we've been exploring the concept of magic in relation to the theme. We recently crafted our own metaphors about how we feel about reading. Here are some lovely responses from Year 4:
- 'Reading is a window into a new world.' - Victoria Ransom
- 'Reading is a challenging, fun adventure.' - Zoe Blackmore
- 'Reading is food for the soul.' - Mona Bachmann
- 'Reading is freedom.' - Ryan Lu
ACTION-PACKED WEEK
We have an exciting week planned for Book Week with our annual dress-up parade, author visits and various other fun activities. This year, we've also introduced PJ Day, due to the strong association with reading at bedtime. Students can wear oodie or dressing gown (with uniform underneath), as well as bring their teddy or their favourite bedtime read to share with peers. Weather permitting, we'll have a buddy picnic on the Green.
BOOK WEEK TOTES FOR SALE
At McKie Library, we’re fortunate to have a vibrant and up-to-date collection, including all the latest and trending titles. We'd love to give back to students who do not have the same opportunities.
As such, we've designed a custom printed tote (100% cotton) bag with long handles to celebrate our Kilvington Readers Festival and Book Week. Priced at $12, all profits will be donated to the Murrup Foundation's 'School Engagement and Retention’ Program, which supports First Nation’s children and young people on their school journey.
Tote bags will be available to purchase at the McKie Library or online via the School website.
Cultural experience - Hiroshima Jogakuin School
This week, we hosted a cultural experience in the Library for our visitors from Hiroshima Jogakuin School, Japan.
Students enjoyed learning about Australian colloquialisms such as 'arvo' and 'bikkie'. They were risk-takers and tasted vegemite and toast as well as fairy bread, Anzac bikkies and lamingtons.
The students relished the opportunity to complete a puzzle highlighting all the iconic Australian land features, flora and fauna. They loved exploring our manga collection.
Finally, they were treated to a few episodes of Bluey. To conclude, Vanessa Grosso presented a beautiful book titled Australia Illustrated by Tania McCartney to one of the students. We hope it will be a treasured keepsake available at their school library!
