Years 7 to 10 Design Challenge

Louise Macfarlane, Academic Dean of Science

From March to July, several Kilvington students from Years 7 to 10 took part in the 'Design, Engineer and Construct!' Challenge set by the UK firm, Class Of Your Own

Seven schools from Australia and from eight different countries worldwide have registered for the Challenge. Kilvington is proud to be part of this global initiative to educate future leaders in design and construction.

The Kilvington Design Team included Milan Bays, Zac Cooper, Jerome McClimont, Nicholas Giouris, Ely Buchman, Ayaan Gupta, Sofia Karagounis, Cassie Yeo, Toby Smith and Georgia Thompson.

As part of the learning challenge, the students worked tirelessly on the design of a net-zero railway station hub and transport system for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

Ultimately, they produced a design that stands out as a beacon of sustainability, inclusivity and cutting-edge innovation. By combining their artistic, analytical, mathematical, logistical and teamworking skills, they created a hub that stands as a testament to what students can achieve when they come together for a brighter, greener future.

Years 11 and 12 Formal

Emily Tatford and Isabella O’Brien, Year 12

The Years 11 and 12 Formal was a night we'd all been dreaming about the whole year, bringing us more stress than SACs or exams.

Planning for the Formal felt like organising a wedding: the corsage, the nails, the hair, the makeup, the lashes, and, most importantly, the outfit. The question 'What are you wearing?' became a make-or-break moment for year-long friendships as everyone sought to find THE dress.

On the night, the venue transported us to our very own wonderland. The decorations made us feel like we were living our fairytale dream. Each year, Ms Bryce works harder than most of the Year 12s on what is the last hurrah for many. As we lined up for the photobooth, the excitement kicked in, and we were ready for a night of fun, food and friends.

Formal fashion is a highlight of the evening—move over, spring racing carnival! We all made our grand entrances, witnessing our best friends have their Cinderella moments.

Some students chose a hot pink stretch hummer to kick off the celebrations in style. As everyone stepped out, the paparazzi (aka Mum and Dad), lined up to capture the elegance and style of the students. Parents beamed with pride, but were also a bit jealous they couldn't look as good.

The awards are arguably the most entertaining part of the night, adding a touch of fun and recognition to the most deserving. Awards included:

  • Best Dancer: Josh Tighe
  • Biggest Comedian: Thomas Papadopoulos
  • Best-Dressed Girl (Year 11): Alycia Liew
  • Best-Dressed Boy (Year 11): Harry Shanks
  • Best-Dressed Girl (Year 12): Claudia Kentera
  • Best-Dressed Boy (Year 12): Jack Campbell-Manley
  • Cutest Year 11 Couple: Hayden Mellow and Scarlett Robison
  • Cutest Year 12 Couple: Torin Hatswell and Anthea Diplaris
  • Best Besties: Bethany Allison and Charlotte Whisstock

No Formal is complete without a bit of dancing. As the DJ started, we all sprang to life! Students showcased their best moves, and even the teachers couldn’t resist a boogie. There is never a dull moment with Mr French on the dance floor.

The Years 11 and 12 Formal is more than just a big party; it's a celebration of how far we've come together as a cohort, marking the journey of friendship we’ve been on. The memories we made will be cherished forever. As the Year 12s took their final bows, we step confidently into the next chapter of our lives, knowing the best is still to come and that Kilvington will always be a part of who we are.
