Year 3/4
Term 1 Beginnings
Everyone has had a wonderful start to the year with students adjusting quickly to their new learning environment, peers and teacher. Students have been openly sharing, communicating and building relationships with their new friends. We have such a kind, fun and respectful cohort of kids this year and we are really looking forward to supporting them learn and watching them grow throughout the year.
The 3/4 team are excited about the wonderful year ahead.
Reading
Students have worked together to create Independent Reading expectations and have been enjoying reading a minimum of 20 minutes everyday with books chosen from the classroom library.
Our Reading Unit for Term 1 has students completing an Author Study on Roald Dahl and as a class, we are reading James and the Giant Peach. Students will be focusing on a variety of comprehension strategies during lessons.
Writing
In Writing, students have begun their fantasy writing unit. Students are developing skills in writing descriptive settings, characters, problems and understanding a narrative structure. Next week students will begin the process of writing a full fantasy narrative.
Students have also started writer's workshop. This is a great opportunity for students to have freedom in choice of what they are writing with supports.
Maths
Students have begun their unit on place value. This is an essential step in mathematical learning as it focuses on the the value in each digit of a number. Over the coming weeks, we will build, order, name and rearrange numbers that are 4 digits or more. This will lead into our upcoming units on the four operations.
Humanities
Our Humanities unit for Term 1 is Geography. This term we will focus on Australia. We will learn about the states, cities, natural features, landmarks, flora, fauna and climate of our country and students will be given ample opportunity to research using their devices and collaboratively work with their peers in a group project.
Wellbeing
Students have been introduced to the Zones of Regulation and have been discussing the different emotions they may feel when in each of the zones and what strategies they can use to return to the optimum learning zone.
Students have also been enjoying lunchtime clubs and activities in the newly created Wellbeing Hub.
